An HD/Buell dealer near me has a 2000 M2 Cyclone for sale with 1875 miles on it.The are asking about $5300.00, and it appears to be in great shape.I'm a 52 year old rider of over 40 years. I test rode a Blast (because I like thumpers), and an XB9R a while back.I owned a 1984 HD Sportster XLX for some years.
My real questions are about the reliability and longevity of the early Buells. I know there were recalls, and some problems (ex. exhaust stud breakage??). I always liked the looks of the M2, and a single carb is fine with me. I would use it as a commuter and fun backroad machine.
Does this price seem high??

Thanks, Jon Neet

Real low miles the price is not too bad, hopefully you get some mods with that like exhaust and intake..tach kit for sure...Much better choice than the Blast or the XB9R if you are looking for comfort and all around riding. I have had a 2000 M2 for three years and have no significant issues at all. It is a bike you will have to put your hands on to keep up, but is designed with that in mind. Also if you are comfortable with the traditional Sportster motor the M2 will make you feel at home.

I have a 2002 M2 and my friend has a 2000. The most common failure is probably the speedo sensor. Some bikes did break exhaust studs, but if memory serves, I think the real culprit was the front muffler hanger. Just check the exhaust flange nuts every so often and you will be fine. The price is a bit on the high side, even with the low miles. I'd offer $4500-$4800 and ask for a 90 warranty. As a note, the 2000's were the last of the hand welded frames. There is a list of things I would do to the bike if you decide to buy it. While not expensive, a few small upgrades now will save you some headaches down the road. The most important of these is to replace the primary gasket and shift shaft seal with the updated versions. The M2 is a comfortable bike and enjoyable to ride.

For reference, as I remember it the speedo sensor will cost about $15 and took less than an hour to replace on my S3.

I bought a 2000 M2 with 2,100 miles on it this spring. It has about 3,400 on it now and I really like it. I like the classic look and feel of the tube frame Buells, they still look like motorcycles to me where some of the others do not. I'm a "mature" rider and mine does not get abused or ridden very hard. It is truly a joy to ride.

The 2000 Cyclones had a few issues or quirks that may or may not show up. I consider it a "hands on" sort of bike, but I enjoy working on it for the most part. After you sort out a few of the details, it should not need a lot of attention.

The primary chain tensioner may need to be upgraded to the later improved one. With the low miles you'll have some time to check on that before it is likely to fail.

Getting the breathers out of the air cleaner is a good idea so blowby does not oil up the filters and stuff. And getting rid of the "breadbox" air cleaner really improves the looks on the right side.

Changing to a larger low speed jet and adjusting the mixture screw will improve off idle smoothness and low speed performance remarkably.

My rocker arm covers just started leaking oil a little and it will get worse if I don't take care of it soon (replace the gaskets with the later/improved ones).

If you read through the Knowledge Vault and Old School Buell sections here you can get a feel for the things that people had to work on or had trouble with. Also there are some recalls items and fixes that took care of some of the problems.

I got a very good deal on mine at $3,300. I see them advertised for/selling more down around the $4,000 - $4,500 range I think. The low mileage is a good thing but the price may still be a little high. I'd offer $4,500 on it and see what they say. If they are firm at that price see if they
will throw in a service plan and/or warranty.

i had problems with my 99m2 however, it had almost 8000 miles on it when i got it and three previous owners. still, i would never sell it. if it breaks, i'll fix it. i use it for commuting mostly and weekend back road blasts. it's by far the best bike i've ever owned, it is everything i've ever wanted in a bike. i paid 5800 in 2001, back then it was a decent deal, it had all the recalls done and a buell race kit. since then i've put another six grand or so into it but, a lot of that was upgrades. i think 4500 is a decent deal with some kind of warranty (ride the crap out of it while it still has one), make sure all the recalls are done (if they'll still honor them i don't know if they do that forever). oh, and get real familiar with the knowledge vault, there are some preventative maintenance tasks you're going to want to perform, like that primary gasket thing amongst others. the cyclone is a great commuter bike, it handles well, is comfortable and gets great gas mileage not to mention that - wow - this is a MOTORCYCLE feeling!

I also found a 2002 M@ with 8000 miles at another dealer. They are asking $4500.00 for it.Any real changes between the 2000 and the 2002 models??

Thanks for all the replys too.

Bird,
The 2002 is the most sorted of the Tubers.
It has all of the necessary stuff already done for you.
Only thing would be the primary cover gasket.
It already has the front exhaust hanger, the new style rocker box gaskets, tach, latest shock, etc.etc.
$4500 is afair price. Go for it, you'll love it.

Does it have any mods? Like a pipe, intake, etc..

BTW, I have a 2000 M2. I've had a few problems but not necessarly Buell's fault.
I love my M2 even with it's quirks.
They are what they are, a two wheeled grin machine!

It'll break, you will fix it, it's a great bike.

My only advice is that my 2000 M2 was traded in for around $3000 with 25k miles on it. It was, at that point, arguably a far more reliable bike then it was when it rolled off the showroom floor (as I had effectively done everything to it that was done by the time the 2002 models came out).

So I would worry less about mileage, and more about condition / upgrades. I would definately take an 02 with 8k miles over an 00 with 3k miles. You can take an 00 and improve it to an 02, I would guess maybe 5 weekend days of work, and maybe $300 - $500 worth of bits.

With 2000 models, you have to make sure it still doesn't have the SRP shock. I'd pass on any 2000 model that still had this shock unless they took at least $600 off the asking price.

I bought my 2000 M2 with 4000 miles and dropped (but straight) for $3350 from a private seller in July. It has most of the bugs worked out from the previous owner's neglect, and I am about to do the updates.

This is my first bike, and I love it. The fact that it's not perfect makes owning it more personal for me. I get to enjoy the thrill and frustration of figuring out what is wrong with it and how to fix it.

Hey Jon, I'd go for the 02. As stated above, about the only issue you might have is with the primary gasket and that's an easy 1 hr fix. What color is the 02?
