I agree with you Oldog - a lot of the changes seem to be for little gain.

When you plug and play a USB device the system creates a virtual COM port and assigns a port number. I have had to force Windows 2000 to change the assigned COM port number for serial to USB and PCMCIA adapters to the 1 to 4 range for certain software and hardware.

I did that by going to the Device Manager and selecting a different COM port from the Properties -> Advanced Settings menu.

In the past (other OS? different hardware?) I had to force the same change by choosing an I/O address (from an advanced properties menu?) that forced a port number in the needed range.

And I'm not arguing the "how to", just sharing experiences.

Jack

Jim:
The dongle not responding message is actualy a little encouraging there could be other issues
but it sounds like the thing MAY see the com port inside, just not the dongle so we may be half way home

I'm not trying to be a jerk here I am trying to think of every thing I have run across in almost 20 years of indutrial control and communications for rs232 and rs422 formats

I will assume that you have the driver for the pcmcia card loaded, so some more questions for you

how many db9 sockets on the pcmcia card adapter cable 1 or 2?

lets "assume" that the card has 2 ports, and in the device manager they show up as com 1 & 2

set the software to com1 and shut it down
reboot (cold)
then trying with the software set com 1 and connector a, hooked up remember you only have 15 sec to establish comms with the ecm from "on" so connect every thing first then power on and try the scm (to read the dongle)
If this fails power down he bike, swap sockets and try again , the software should connect in 2 or 3 seconds

IF #1 did not connect repeat procedure from boot with port2 set in the software prior to reboot

this sounds like a hassle (it is) but this is how I would trouble shoot a com problem

select scm from the menu to get the dongle read
the dongle must be read first before the software will work. ( and it must be connected to the bike "I think" )
its data will appear in the product name box of the form the version appears below

if i was not clear above I have run across situations where hardware was to be connected to a laptop for program down load.
If the equipment was in program mode and the cable was switched prior to the transfer the load would allways fail, if you connected the cable THEN set transfer mode, then started the transfer it "usually" worked

coms can be tricky to trouble shoot do you have any thing else to test with, an old external modem with lights for rd / sd and a 9 x 25 cable
have been usefull to verify that the outside world stuff works

Oh yeah jack that was quite helpful thanks...

Jim its in my best interest to help you because the laptop that I use is now 3 years old and it is a refurbished unit I will have to do this too
If I help you succeed here it just may be easier for me too.

Making some progress. Product ID read. VDO-EFI Ver# 2.3. This was with the USB serial port set to Com1. The software is telling me Com 1 disconnected in the box on the lower right though. Still can not do any tests. USB drivers are on the laptop. I've got to verify that the card drivers are there.

Good,
next time you set it up
try the control c [ ctrl + c ] on one of the monitoring pages see if it will connect,
through the "thingy"
or
in the device manager where do the pcmcia ports show up( look under com ports ) say that they are where you said they were in your earlier post
try using com 4 and if you are using a 2 port card [ 4/5 ] check which socket the dongle is connected to, ( the test above )
"it should work", of course the thingy "should work too"
Your PM is promising, there may be a "timing issue" but I think we can work around it
the software reports an update rate In my case it was about 6 Hz or 6 reads of the ecm per second which aint to shoddy for what we are doing but that may be why we see the no connect
remember the 15 second thing, get every thing cabled start the software then the key and ign sw.

as allways keep us posted.

OK, here goes. The card on Com1 reads the dongle after about 45 seconds SCM as MM-1AW15M ver#0.0 WTF!!!

The USB serial set to Com 1 reads VDO-EFI ver#2.3, which I believe is correct. I bring up the Gauges/Meters and hit Control/c and.................................................
....................................................
Nothing. It says connecting. Panel comes up with, Select Vehicle Manufacture/ECU
Select com port
Connect Cable
Connect cable power
And it sits there and never connects

I think the USB serial is working, but the card is what gets me. It will only connect on com 1 and then the SCM info is bogus. I've got nothing to test it on.

WTF, With The Facts Man I do understand your frustration!
Please keep trying I will try to help you.

ok the vdo efi is correct for the "SCM"

It says connecting. Panel comes up with, Select Vehicle Manufacture/ECU
when that "comes up" are you given a box with the vdo efi as a choice? I think the soft ware package is written in a way that multiple ecu types are supported, I could see where a shop would have a note book and several dongles
for different systems. so the choice option makes some sense.

so I have this straight
the usb adapter reads the dongle but wont connect, to the ecm you get nothing the software freezes

the pcmcia card spends a long time trying to read the dongle and then the software comes back with some bogus stuff and does not connect

I tell you what I will go buy a usb "thingy" this afternoon and try to duplicate what you are doing.
I will then if I can get it to fail or work, post in detail the steps needed to get it working with my note book,( if possible )
If we are unsuccess full here I think that WE might want to get with Techno and have the information come through BWB ( Blake if you are out there is this ok? )
oh and hows about that new technical term "thingy"
hang in there 5liter this is what seprates the men from the boys..

From the techno research web site (with an edit)

Problem: Unaware of the Communication Ports in use.

Solution:
1. If Microsoft XP Operating System is in use, use the following steps:
display is in the XP mode,
-> My computer, left click to highlight
-> Right click, select properties
-> System properties dialoug is displayed
-> Select Hardware Tab
-> open device manager
-> Ports (COM & LPT)
*Note Communications Port number that is present or in use

Problem: Correctly Partnering with a USB to Serial Adapter

Solution: TechnoResearch Incorporated suggests the Keyspan High Speed USB Serial Adapter :
http://www.keyspan.com/products/usb/USA19HS/

its a little thin but this is the factory poop so far......

I have one more available Palm III (a IIIxe if I recall correctly) that I will send free to anyone that promises to attach it to a Buell.

I do *not* have any cradles for it, so you will need to find your own sync cable. You can sync through a laptop infrared with no problem, most laptops support this fine, but I think the technoresearch dongle thing wants a palm cradle to connect onto.

If you want it and will use it... post a message here saying "dibs" (so nobody else gets their hopes up) and send me a PM with a shipping address.

All:
I purchased a "thingy" by dynex, sure enough the software does not connect,
Based on the way the program is acting the software is seeing the port but the dongle may not have power, I get the key off on dialog that 5liter mentions above.

some interesting things,
you have to shut down the program SOME TIMES to get a port change to take effect, others just change to a different view of the data, others just change options. Its not consistent.

When i first started the thingy came up as com 4

I moved it to #2 no joy
I moved to my #1, connect
I tried to set the software to com #4 ERROR MESSAGES (good) so I think it sees the port internaly
Reboot(Warm)
no ports operated for a while
after some "fiddling" ie shut down program, change ports, Re boot, check DM settings com1 came back thingy went to Com4 (possible driver issue?)

after one swap from thingy to com #1 a dongle error message came up and I had to reboot to get it working it looks like the keyspan adapter mentioned by Hotrodsportster might work (factory says so)
when working the tool is usefull.

Its sad that no other option is available with the converter, If I had the pcmcia card I would try it 5 liter, but just from you description it sounds like this software does not see it

Techno:
Over all I would give you a "C" for the heart of the product IS NOT TOO ROBUST..
I THINK THAT IT COULD HAVE BEEN DONE BETTER.
IN LIGHT OF THE FACT THAT COM PORTS HAVE BEEN DISAPPEARING FROM NOTE BOOKS FOR SEVERAL YEARS. PERHAPS A VERSION WITH A USB TO DONGLE CONNECTION WOULD BE BETTER.
omitting the keyspan adapter.

If I were having this difficulty out right
(My PC has a com port)I would be unhappy, as it is I will not purchase your products for my autos it works but it could no should be better.

I normaly dont like to critizise but, I Have written software that used the comports between a
plc and a pc, and I wrote the comms code to make it work, so I have a clue

This is aimed at that general public, and as such there are some serious short commings
ONE the help system is too sparce (useless)
TWO the 15 second connect time limit that is wrong on a pc i waited up to 1 minute key on to connect and it connected every time that port one was in use

The selections of connection methods are lacking, on the surface it looks like that you (Techno) are working to the PDA use rather than pc

some food for thought, notebooks are dropping in price to the pda price range while having a pda in the pocket is appealing a notebook is more usefull even if its more to deal with.

Most folks using THIS product are cycle shops, and individuals, ALL of which want to take it out of the box set it up and it works, based on my corespondence with other enthusiasts here, thats not the case. Oh you need a so and so adapter for 300.00$ retail, We expect better.
I will be sending the techno folks a link to this thread ...

sorry I could not solve it for you.
You will have to try the keyspan
I just tested the "thingy" on a modem with 3 other software packages they are signaling it
its a power or resource issue, and thanks for hangin with me while i fiddled, I have a built in com port on my laptop so its a non issue for now, I will be buying a key span soon to so the software will migrate, assuming that it works with the later versions of Weendoz. maybe B&B electronics has something similar they do obd2
and their stuff IS good and DOES work as advertised.

We use the Keyspan US to Serial adapter every day at the racetrack. It is used inconjunction with other serial and parallel adapters on Laptops with and without built in ports.

It should solve your "issues"

Hey guys!
greetings from fla,

5 liter what are the settings for the port under the device manager in windows?
this may now require "factory" involvement the "disconnect" sounds like a possible error checking settings but the factory info is so sparce it hurts.

thanks blake moving this to the kv is a good thing.....

Port is set to com 1. The keyspan has its own unique tab under "port settings". You get a "Start Assistant" which has a "properties" tab where you can set "End Points" (either high performance or compatable),"Transmit Completion Timing Advance"(standard or faster), or "Reciever FIFO Buffer Size"(from none to 63)
}

just some educated guess work here,
not haveing the stuff to look at
1. compatible first choice then high speed
2. enhance speed small buffer
3. moderate speed moderate buffer

can you set "resource targets"?, in the bad ol days, the ports were at specific addresses,
is the key span as it transfers the data droping the ecm for a short time while the uart is being enptied? all speculative here the settings sound like buffering and flow control behind the port

your problem is not the first instance i have heard of
