i am tired of packing the v-h can all the time and also having to wear ear plugs when i ride.

i have decided to put the stock muffler back on.

does anyone use the stock setup with a modified motor?

nrhs stage 2 heads, 1250 kit, mikuni 42, race air cleaner q module and roller rockers.

i am hoping for a boost in torque down low and midrange and hope it does'nt totally kill the big end.

what do you think?

thanks...philip

I don't have a modified motor but I bought mine with a "daytona boss". I recently put an ebay stocker on it and found that the midrange was killed.
The top end was not.
Also, I don't have to carry a 1/2" wrench.
I think you will be disapointed.

You carry a half inch wrench too? I thought it was only me. I didn't know the V&H had packing. Is that on the SSR2 model? I have decided to not invest another penny with V&H ever...I will buy Chinese parts before I buy another V&H product...Den

Philip, why not consider an after market car muffler. Many types out there from the simple 2 1\2 inch straight through I use,(high heat painted, fiberglass packed for $30) to more exotic, SS, carbon fiber, packed, spiral baffel, etc. Almost all will come in sizes to fit Buells. I use mine as is and performance is great in all rpm ranges. Noise in considerably louder than stock but not really objectionable. These mufflers can be tuned with baffle type inserts for some wanted backpressure for cammed engines which would also quiet them somewhat. Many options out there for minimal cost and can be tuned to exactly what you need for your engine, noise, looks, price requirements. They will require you to adapt hangers. See my post in the KV under Mufflers, headers, etc for hanger fix. Look in the Jegs, Summit and J.C.Whitney catalogs/websites. Bob T.

thanks for the input. i was thinking about using the moroso spiral flow muffler from summit. it might have been your setup i saw pictures of. i like the idea of no packing but do not want it much louder than stock.

the mor-94050 has a 2 1/2 in and out with a 8 inch case and 12 inch overall.

dynomax has a 12inch case 16 1/2 overall race muffler but i am not sure if it is packed or not.

i need to measure and might give it a try.

thanks again...philip

I think that the drummer XB exhaust is a re-welded stock XB muffler. I expect that you could call them (kdfab?)and ask if they could "drummerize" your old stock M2 muffler, then you'd get something closer to what you're looking for.

Also, I've got the new supertrapp on my M2, and its very well built. It is much improved over the old design, it's pretty stout. It's pretty quiet too, no ear damage but still louder than stock. American Sportbike carries them, $400.

One of the local buellers here (in Utah) cut open his stock pipe at the welds and cut up the innards to flow more exhaust, sounded just a bit deeper and louder than stock. It was not as loud as the aftermarket offerings but he claimed good power.

cutting the stock muffler might just work. a little more sound than stock would be ok, just not the mind numbing pounding i'm getting now.

thanks again...philip

I've got a stocker laying around that has been partially modified. It's just taking up space. Let me know if you're interested.

Regarding the V&H packing.
Try the packing kit that Al at American Sport Bike carries.
Almost 4000 miles on mine (on an S2) and it still sounds like the day I did the repack.
Very heavy duty stuff, it's in 1 piece, kind of like a thick sock.
It's got a thick inner and outer layer you just slide it over the perforated inner tube then reassemble the muffler.

My stock muffler made a good .50BMG target. Well worth it. Great fun. Surprisingly sturdy!

Is it louder now?
I think I would have chosen 7.62mm instead.
