After reading about Wyched Fleshes' Get off due to a "Pole Vault" I was concerned about the supertrap that I have.
The deal was nice, (got it from E-Bay). I read some where on the board that there was a problem with 1 version of the SS super trap slip-on coming apart at the front. I like the light weight and the sound
But like you I would not like to get skinned up or the sled bent for lack of some welds
Can any of you "buelligans" tell me if this is the recalled version the photos of the newer ones have a "cone" shaped junction from the collector to the muffler body.

If the can and the elbow are 2 peices... YES THAT IS THE RECALL MUFFLER!! get that off your bike ASAP.. I had one that almost fell off my bike... so i got it replaced from supertrapp...

Oh @#$%@%!
the set up is 2 piece! they have a "diddly pin"
that locks the parts together, It almost fell off going around the block (no pin)
glad I did not have the joint welded as I thought about.

I was concerned that the front might give away at the canister neck or the pin might come out and the parts seprate ala wyckeds

That is most definitely the old one.

See that seam where the stub pipe goes into the front cap on the muffler? It goes another 1/2" inside the muffler, and welds to that front cap at the END of the folded in flange of the front cap.

The failure mode is that the metal fatigues on the front cap where it turns 90 degrees back into the muffler. That bend is esentially in cantilever bending, and the combination of the tight bend cold worked metal plus the cantilever flexing causes it to fail.

I am putting a brand new one of those on my race header on my S1W now, but I had it welded at that seam the whole way around the perimeter. I believe that will prevent the flexing that caused the metal fatigue to begin with. But you can bet I'll be watching that joint very closely. I have no problem with usig a pin for retention, have use one for 35,000 miles on the old pipe without issues.

after looking at the photo and reading your post Al that makes sense. It also explains why the newer ST setup has got the cone section rather than the flat one

Wish me luck with the folks at supertrap
They may not want to trade me out on this part

As allways to all thanks for the input. I will continue to post here as things progress

I think I will make an effort to notify the vendor on E-bay that the item "he" sold me
was a problem item ( not looking for any thing other than to save some one some grief.)

Supertrapp pipe, both iterations- are total garbage- scrap it and install the D&D header pipe combo and be done with it...

2 things, did you buy it new cause if you did, then are you over your 1 year warrenty? if not, then you can get a new one w/o any problem. If you are then you gotta get a new one.

One great thing about E-bay is being able to generate the purchase history.
Got the puppy Jan 12 this year new in the box, from an e-bay merchant.
The seller got his hands on 6 of these, as I recall. (no pun intended)
"Got a good deal" as I see it. (if they make good)
I am refraining from naming the merchant at this time to preclude "him" having a problem.
Based on conversations that I had with him on another purchase I suspect that he had NO CLUE that these were recall items.

Perhaps this is simplistic but
some one paid super trapp for them (the 6 mufflers)originaly, I paid a reputable merchant for NEW equipment.
The Supertrapp Co. know that they have a problem with this product it's only right that they make good were I in that position I would.

Besides after your response I did My homework in the KV a precident has been set.

I hope that ST will make good on the faulty parts, and make an effort to find the other 5
BEFORE SOME ONE GETS HURT!
If they choose not I will find something else
and do my best to alert other bikers (all brands)
that there may be a potential issue in purchase of this manufactuers' equipment.
So far Gerri at ST has been polite and helpful,
the descision is not hers to make so I hope to have an answer tomorrow.

I respectfully disagree. I've had the supertrapp on my S3 for 20,000 miles. It is bulletproof, it performs well, is tunable, I like it. The mounts are the best out there from my experiences. I like it enough that I'm modifying one of the old ones to put on my race header (with an open end cap). You didn't provide any meaningful reasons why you consider the pipe to be "garbage". Why do you hold that opinion? The only failure mode I've heard about on the new one is that the core locking screw best be tight, for if it comes out, it beats itself up on the inside. Mine has never had an issue there.

When my original old style supertrapp failed the way the early ones did (as described earlier), supertrapp did right by me. Not only did they replace it for free with the new style one, but I had polished my old one to a mirror shine, a lot of work. Before shipping me a new one, they sent it out and had it polished. THAT is good customer service, hopefully it is still there for you, Jim.

I think that they were thinking that my pipe is an old second hand one, and its not.
The other thing that I was concerned about were the mounting bands they are not tight on the body of the muffler or the connecting pipe I placed a 1/16" silicon rubber strip in the rear strap to support the muffler body at the rear,
( I wish I had a second strap ) and I need to place one in the front if the new one is loose

I too am a bit puzzled what happened that you have this view of the super trapp, I would like to hear why.
I am not trying to give you any grief and would like to hear any specifics that you will share.

As a former tool and machine builder with some welding skills, the pipe that I have is: Reasonably well built, well finished, was well packed for shipment, the instructions to install were hyper detailed.
the thing is made of stainless steel!

with the super trapp I installed a force winder.
with that set up the bike picked up power all across the band, I have posted the dyno figures to back this up

The problem that they have with the front of the muffler is one I can see happening. Based on what I read on the board other brands have some problems with cracking mounts etc.. If you E-bay you will find a large number of different aftermarket mufflers for Buells
I am concidering all of my options includng repair or alterations if supertrapp declines the option to make good in this instance.

My concern for AL would be if the weld will be enough extra material to prevent the cracking of the front "spout" the failure mode is the worry

The reason that I got the thing was I purchased it from a vendor on e-bay that got a "lot" of mufflers from some where this dealer sells a variety of cycle related stuff some times at Great prices sadly "he" was UN-aware of the problem most likely

At the end of the day I just have a couple of issues.
1. will the maker of this trouble prone equipment stand behind it. I bought it new
2. what can I do to help prevent possible injury to my self and others
3. I need to avoid a hard get off I have steel in my left arm another get off from a "pole vault" may result in my using a bucket to transport it.

Ok to help you out... I also bought my origonal supertrapp from ebay, about 3 months into riding i noticed my rear bracket was broken. I called supertrapp and they said that i had to pay for a new bracket....I was a bit puzzled but ok, they sent me a new set, and not one month later that new one broke. Not only that, but i also had welded the elbow to the can and it broke (not at the weld but where the pipe entered the can), and was about 1/4" from falling off. I was at home when i saw this.

I called supertrap and they informed me (accually sales person who had no athority), that this particular muffler was recalled and the recall was over. I hung up in anger, asked my company lawer about my situation and she informed me that if i truely bought it NEW then the warrenty is still valid, no matter what as long as the package was unopened when purchased then the warrenty still holds true. So i called Supertrap back and informed them of my findings.. very politley i might add. Again they told me pritty much that i was out of luck. Well again P.O.'ed my wife suggested that i contact the BBB, and just inform them. So i filled out an online application, and was very truthfull about how i was unhappy w/ not the product (due to it being a recalled item and the company already fixed the problem) but w/ their warrenty department, and how they were very rude and unwilling to fix my problem. In the BBB app. there was a space to fill out for Compensation. I said I wanted NOTHING from them for free, and I just wanted to let people know of their poor employee knowledge and willingness to help.

One month to the day i received a brand new muffler. I was VERY surprised. Not only was it the Updated version, but the Buell logo muffler.

I was very happy, but it was too bad that it took the steps that it did to get that far. So be warned they may put up road blocks in your way.

just word to the wise, that is all. Oh and my new supertrapp I LOVE! it is a great muffler, and hasn't caused a single problem in over 20,000 miles.

Hey Gennie!
Before you call a product like SuperTrapp total garbage you had better be careful. I have seen your vaunted D&D fall apart on a guy's bike.
I had my original ST on for 10,000mi. until the dealer forgot to either install or tighten the front hanger bolt. It started coming apart like Al described after that episode. I then welded the inlet pipe and it held just fine for quite awhile until I contacted ST about it. They replaced it free even though they really didn't cause the problem. My new one has been just fine for over 35,000, yes 35,000mi.
Wyked's problem was using the wrong pipe not defective equipment.
The best thing I like about the ST is its tuneability. I can keep it quiet for my daily morning commute but open it up for spirited riding.
It p. me off when someone here posts about something being garbage whether it be ST, Dunlop or D&D.

Still have the old two piece SuperTrapp on the S3
with 48,000 miles. Oh,I'm using it with the race pipe also. The new recalled muffler will not work with the race pipe.

Well, I can only go on my experience- Big Al is a Dealer, and he's forgotten more about Buells than I could hope to know- but I had nothing but problems with both iterations of the Supertrapp Disc- The first one broke in the way as described by most- Supertrapp sent me the new iteration (the Buell one is just a re-badged version of the Supertrapp) and I followed the setup as suggested by Sun Harley Davidson in Denver- in fact they installed it for me- and within 1000 miles the front hangar was getting tiny cracks where the hangar met the body of the muffler. The "give" in the steel was so much that my OEM header ended up riding out and away from the studs on day and it came to rest on my CF race cleaner- burning a dime size hole in the clear coat on the bottom. This ended up not being a problem; because the rear hangar just disappeared on me one day- thank god I safety wired the whole contraption. Upon removal, the damage was far worse than I had expected- internal baffling had come away from the body of the muffler despite me installing 2 retaining studs that came with both mufflers and a pop rivet. The front hangar was cracked on both "ears"- a serious compromise that has dire consequences where the component is mounted above the rear wheel- The opening from the front, where the OEM header meets the can had widened out and deformed to the point where I could never get it to mount true- All of this within 3000 miles. It was in such bad shape I couldn't even bring myself to offer it for sale on eBay- I threw it away. My D&D has been excellent, you get what you pay for, I guess. I recently removed it to check for rust (I'm in Virginia) and I swear to you that it looks as it did when I removed it from the packaging. In their defense, Supertrapp has excellent customer service and are very, very responsive, and I'd have no problems using their products and something that is not as demanding as a Buell. They have a good reputation- but I'm not risking gettin' pole vaulted into the road because someone is pleasant on the phone! If I am not mistaken old Jim X-1 guy got pitched into the street by one of these things...

That is definately a horror story.
I will watch the new one closely as exhaust systems on the buell motor cycles seem to need more than casual attention. I know that the header studs "go away over time"

I just used the standard banding wire and pliers- I don't know the exact nonclemature- it's the tool I used to use to install anti-pilfering seals on vehicles when I was in the army. I'm sure and Matco or Snap on truck would have a pair. The banding wire costs pennies. I drilled a teenie hole in the rear Z- hangar and banded it to that- when I inspected my scoot the wire was the only thing supporting the muffler-

apparently gerry isnt concerned about us being pole vaulted because of time limitations...
i just got off of the phone with her. I tried to get mine replaced and she said "they cant relace every muffler just because they are breaking on some of them"

sounds like they were concerned before but now they arent so worried.
i hope mine doesnt let loose and kill me!
they apparently arent worried about it.
makes me think that supertrapp isnt as good of a company as I read and hear!
they must have gotten their liability insurance paid up!

i just talked to gerry again and shes not interested in replacing my danger muffler.

shes offered dealer cost to me which is nice but i have already spent the money the first time when i got it new...
responsibility and concern from supertrapp seems to have a time limit...

they have lost my business...
