I know what you mean. To most Harley riders Buells and Buell owners are just a bastard bunch. That is until they want a kicka#@$ motor for their "custom"

There's no accounting for taste. Sad to see such beautifully and thoughtfully crafted bikes destroyed like that.

All for an S2's stock Sportster motor?!?

I think a lot of the chopper guys don't understand the difference between the S2 motors and those of the later, more powerful Buell motors (especially those with Thunderstorm heads). They see "Buell" and automatically think it's already hot-rodded for them. If we want to preserve the S2s, I think we need to educate these bike butchers on the fact that those S2 motors are more or less a stock Sportster motor and it would take quite a bit more money to make S1W or X1 power. Of course this won't save the later bikes, but at least there are a lot more X1s and M2s out there...

I knew this was going to happen. You can get a Buell for about half of what a used Sportster costs.

The guy I bought my "chopper donor" S2 from was surprised to learn about the power differences between the S2 motors and the later Thunderstorms. I educated him in hopes that he want to find a T-storm bike to butcher and I could score the S2 intact...no dice.

Do you want this to stop? If so why? The way I see it the Buell market is real soft. If people keep this up with cuttting up good bikes to make there dream bike it's all good here.
The way I see it is every time this happens those of us with bikes we plan on keeping should be all smiles. We can sit back and feed on the flood of cheap parts. While the whole time knowing over time we will have the rare and hard to find bikes.
Just give it a few years and our market value will start to rise from this.

Who gives a about market value?
You can't ride market value to work.
You can't play with market value on twisty roads.
Market value doesn't make you say "woohaa!" when you stop for lunch.
Market value in this case is going to become a means to squeeze the greatest amount of money from the Buell enthusiasts. We are the folks who are going to be paying through the nose for this stuff someday, not the other guys.

By the time I am done with my S2 it is probably not going to be worth $1000 as I plan to ride it into the ground!

My nearly 100,000 mile S2 is worth $4,750!

How do I know this? The County Tax Collector told me so in the bill for the vehicle property tax. Property taxes on vehicles...The most assinine thing I have heard of!

Buell motors are flip flopping in value on Ebay. Some stockers hit $4G and others barely hit $1G. Yet whole bikes are barely pulling down $4G on ebay. If you want it to stop, then you need to figure out how to get the Ebay pricing for whole bikes to rise and the individual pricing for the motors drop.

AMEN!

I have parts to start building an S-2 from the ground up to match my current S-2. I am really looking forward to bringing this one back to life. It was used for racing most of its life and was torn apart, abused, etc. Frame is still good though...I have the fairing mount, the dash board, one fairing that will probably work, turn signals, a swing arm, set of wheels, Underneath tank, seat, and an exhaust.....
will be looking for other parts, and who knows, another one may be saved.

What really blows is Buells with all their faults are pretty cool and not that common of a bike. I actually had to look to find mine and ended up having to drive 6 hrs round trip to get it home. i hate to see such a unique motorcycle parted. Whether it be S-1,2 Etc or M2 or X1. someday the motorcycle world will be sorry.

I was looking for just an engine for a custom minimal Buell project and found the prices absolutely ridicules. Paid 3800.00 for this complete “96” on EBAY with 3000 miles on pro-built Thunderstorm spec engine. Cylinders and heads were polished with plated cam, primary and rocker boxes and Nitrous that the seller was not aware of. He thought the Nitrous bottle was a catch can.

You could not buy the engine and make the modifications for that, and I got the entire bike!!!!!

I adjusted all controls changed the fluids, and proceeded to ride the out of it through the Blue Ridge mountains for a week.

When I got home, I Spent 200.00 on new tires, then 45.00 on a stock rejetted carb to replace the Quicksilver and Nitrous setup. I liked the bike so much I cannot take it apart for the project, sooo, so now I have two S2’s and still looking for that project engine.

Rick,
You've got a stunning keeper there. Wow. Hang onto it and enjoy it the way it was intended. There's few machines around can provide the poised and balanced ride an S2 can. Good on you.

HJB,
What, no witty quotes from your archived stash? I've come to rely on those for daily larfs. : ) Some of them are brilliant! Good work, and nice bike.

Lawrence

How could you part this out?

LOL...My S1 has gone in one year from people asking me to name a price to someone offering me $1500. The funny thing is, chassis-wise it is totally transformed (for the better)...it just looks like .

a lot of people really like thier S2's. Are there any advantages over the S3's? Anything that Buell changed that they should have left alone? Did Buell make any perticular improvements to be noted?

just curious... i ride an S3.

S-2 was more of a handbuilt bike--aluminum oil tank, removable aluminum sideplates for ease of changing isolators and belt, fully adjustable front forks, and the 1995's had lots of carbon fiber, the bodywork is fiberglass and not ABS.You sit in and S-2 when you ride. You sit on and S-3.

I just picked up a 95 S-2 with only 29,000 miles on it and it has been very well taken care of for $4200.00. I bought this one for me and the wife to ride and have the 96 S-1 as the hotrod.

I think of the Tubers as to being very similar to the Muscle cars of the late 60's/early 70's. The numbers are getting smaller but the bikes are still cool. I think they will be associated with the simplicity of the design and the raw power they put out.

There is/was an S2 in the Milwaukee Journal Sunday classifieds.

http://www.adquest3d.com/search_new/result.asp?brd=1221&pubcat=435&category=9&pa g=9&city=&state=&zipcode=&radius=&datepub=5%2F9%2F2005&yearmin=&yearmax=&pricema x=&mileagemax=&andor=or&keyword1=&keyword2=&keyword3=&keyword4=&notkeyword1=&x=8 &y=20

I have no idea if it's still available or anything about it. $4,400.
