Has anyone else had trouble with their mechanical speedometer? I took the speedo and tach off to paint the bezel black, put them back on, and then the speedo went crazy. It bounced back and forth for a couple of seconds, then slowly buried the needle clockwise and would not go back to zero. I opened it up and found that the spring broke off and became wrapped around the shaft. I am scared of putting the new one on until I know what caused this to happen. At $160 a pop, I’d rather not experiment. I checked the cable and everything looks fine. Since I don’t believe in coincidence, the only thing I can think of is that it was probably dropped. Does anyone else have any ideas? Will upload a few pics later.

Look between the 'flywheel' and the numbers

i used to own old volkswagens and i had a speedo that behaved exactly as you describe... when i took it apart to fix it i found that the two rotating pieces were simply rubbing against each other... i managed to get everything aligned and lubricated and it worked perfectly after that.

i think a frayed cable will cause your needle to bounce (don't quote me on that) but i don't think it would cause the other problems you describe.

can you reattach the spring? maybe you could get it working again...

Firemanjim: I’m intrigued. I’ve already ordered one from the dealership, but I may be able to cancel the order. It is the mechanical speedometer correct? What is the mileage on the odometer? Is the bezel black or chrome? Do you have a digital pic you could post for me?

Hey Firemanjim, sorry it took so long to post back. I've decided, after much deliberation, to go with the new one from the dealership. Thanks for the offer though.
