Hi, all!

I hope this subject has not been beaten to death already; What would be a good exhaust system for a '98 S1W? I am willing to get either a full system or just a muffler.

I have to ride in between two townhouses to get to the backyard where I park the bike, so number one parameter for the exhaust is that it must not be obnoxiously loud when I am not revving the engine. Also, I would appreciate if the thing would hold together, and perhaps even make more power than the stock system.

The only other performance mod I have done is the Forcewinder intake.

It sounds like the White Brothers "E" series, being tunable and all, would be the perfect muffler for me. However, from what I gather, they are not available for S1W. Somebody please prove me wrong. :-)

Cheers,
Semi

yer wrong semi. I'm using the e-series on a 97 s1 with race pipe. get the one for the x1 [2.5" collector]should work fine, may require some minor fabrication but prolly not seein that the s1w comes with a 2.5" header [i think]

all i had to do to fit it to the race pipe was fabricate a short [3"] inny/outy connector[header was 1.5" too short to connect the can] and it worx like a dream[12000km so far no probs.]

fully tunable, running 13 discs with race hedder and air cleaner, yost kit still have the lightning heads though [87 hp , 84 lb/ft torque with a nice flat wide torque band]

Sem1,
The new Supertrapp/Buell Slipfit should fit an S1W just fine, and offers the same tunability as the old one. Look back in this section just a bit, you'll see pics and part numbers. I *THINK* that they've got all the old issues sorted out, but only time will tell for sure. Looks good, though.

Jet hot ceramic coating of headers, can anyone tell me approximately how much it costs? Also, is it usually a short turn around job, or do they need to batch up a bunch before they dip, or however it's done?

Thanks.

I'm still chuckling about what Aaron said of what Josh's bike sounded like with the custom exhaust: "Sounded like it had about a thousand horsepower." Classic.

i'm looking for a specification for ceramic replacement packing for a muffler [e-series], i do not want to repack it with fibreglas. if anyone has done this i need to know the type, bulk density, manufacturer etc. i am looking specifically for a CANADIAN vendor if possible.

thanx

Mikej,

They took about 3 days turnaround to ship them back to me and it cost $115 if I remember correctly in the Sterling Silver finish. They guarantee any used part for 3 years, and I am sending mine back this winter for dulling near the cylinders.

Sandman,

The best bang for your buck in my opinion:

White Bros e-series with the stock header. I have this on my 2000 X1 with the stock 12 discs and it rocks!! Very reasonable price too. $250

manufacturer

but seriously folks the e-series has an oval can and a reeeeally beefy rear mount

the supercrap has a round body and a questionable mounting system [i think they may have fixed it but only time will tell]

Sandman,

Here's the hot set-up:

1. Race ECM(must have)
2. Free flowing exhaust
3. K&N air filter
4. Get the breather tubes out of the airbox. Use a catchcan or crankcase breathers. The fumes hurt performance in the stock set-up.

The power commander can be added later to the race ECM for really fine tuning but the Race ECM is needed first for best performance since the power commander doesn't do anything for the ignition curve.

You can also gut your airbox but it hasn't really been proven to help performance.

Numbers you can expect:

rear wheel HP-between 84-88
Torque- around 77

Paison,

As long as your M2 has A 2 1/2" header it will fit. I believe the only difference between the '99 and '00 headers on the M2 is the finish. The difference from the X1 is the added o2 sensor mount.

Any particular reason he(her) is giving up the BOSS?

Well, last night it finally happened. I lost my first nut.

off the rear header.

Dont think any damage occured, but i will look more closly tonight or tomorrow.

Think i am gonna torque them all to about 20 in-lbs and throw a second nut on the studs, if it will fit.

20 inch-lbs seems pretty light, doncha think Travis? The spec is 7 ft-lbs (112 in-lbs), right? With a new gasket, I'm not sure you'd even get adequate sealing with only 20 inch-lbs. I always thought 7 ft-lbs seemed light. Double nuts seems like a good idea, though.

Does anyone have pictures or a copy of the instructions for a SuperTrapp IDS instalation on a 99 X1. I didn't get any instructions with mine and what I have done so far just doesn't look right. Does the stock rear bracket that mounts to the swing arm block need to be removed?

Thanks

Gear,

I suppose that is a good trade off.....

Paison,

The 'Boss' is still a good street pipe to get your hands on. If you have any proplems give me an echo and we will see whats happens. Should have a dyno run in before the end of the month for seat 'o pants validations....

I am looking for a slip on for my m2. Vance and Hines was one that I was looking at. After reading about the bracket braking on so many bikes, I emailed them. “I have a Buell 2001 m2l and was looking at your slip on. Wile on line at some bulletin boards there were post about the front bracket braking. Is this true and if so why?” This was the only response that I got from a Wendy Ryan after two emails and over forty some days. ”Some times the bracket breaks, yes. WHY? Because that bike vibrates like a @#*%$*#. ...............Thanks”. I really do not know what to say except it will be a cold day in @#*%$*# before I ever by a Vance and Hines product.

Travis... take a deep breath and thank God you found it when you did. Much longer, and the header would have been banging around up there, and would have sheared off that stud flush.

Then the easy out would have broken off in the flush stud, and things get worse from there :(

Think about replacing that stud if it is compromised in any way (did I mention you DONT want to break those things off), and get some good stainless grade nuts to double nut everything... it makes them much easier to inspect at a glance after every ride.

Scotty,

I have had a V&H on my 99 M2 for about 9K miles and no problems, but hearing how they don't give a lifetime warranty and moreso, their attitude, I would not buy from them again.

Scotty,

I have a supertrapp IDS on both of my M2s. They have been very nice every time I call them and the pipe is pretty cool. Maybe you want to check it out. No probs so far after a few thousand miles.
