Hello again everyone. I have a non-charging issue in my 2006 XB9-SX. I've gone through the changing troubleshooting in section 7.7 of the service manual. I have 30+ volts AC @ 2,000 rpm across all three pins on connector 46, which is in spec. The stator shows no continuity to ground tested at connector 46, which to me indicates it is okay. When I disconnect regulator connection 77 I see only 5 VDC on the regulator side of the connector (12V DC battery voltage on the other side of the connector, of course). So the manual says, "if the voltage is not more than 15 VDC, voltage is within specifications." Should I take this to mean anything from 0 to 15 is good OR should I see something like 12 to 15 at all times? Put another way, because I'm only seeing 5 VDC at the regulator/rectifier, is that a dead giveaway that it is bad and needs to be replaced? Finally, I see that American Sport Bike has closed operations. Where are people going for parts and support now? Thank you so much everyone!

Yup. Either VR or VR connectors.

You checked the input to the VR, which looks good. You checked the output of the VR, which looks bad. When the bike is running, the AC voltage from the stator (which you verified) should be going into the VR, and coming out as something like 14.2 volts coming out. That will vary, but you will know it is working because it will be battery voltage with the motor not firing, but will be "above battery" voltage when the motor is running and generating power.

Could be VR connectors also, and grounds. But it sure sounds like a cooked VR.

Thank you Reepicheep for the fast reply. I figured I should see 14+ VDC out of the VR but not being an true expert on charging systems I thought I'd ask before buying a new one. The connectors are all in excellent shape - look pretty much like new. I suppose a sentence on page 7-28 under "Voltage Output Test" should read "If voltage is below XX.X VDC or above 15 VDC, regulator is not functioning properly" where XX.X is something like 14.0. Thanks again!

Yeah. A really dead battery might be lower than that, but whatever it is, it should jump up when the bike is running.

That's the dead giveaway. If V(running) = V(not running), and you checked the stator output as being good, that pretty much just leaves the VR as broken.
