So, last week I noticed a low growl from the primary/clutch area on my '08 Scg when I put it in gear and initially thought the primary chain was in need of adjustment. I pulled the inspection cover and the oil was contaminated with water, wtf? The chain was a little loose (total slack measured at 3/4") so I adjusted it cold iaw manual, drained and refilled with F+, new insp cover gasket, new drain plug o-ring...growl is still there. I've been unable to get any further input from anyone but I suspect either the clutch and/or front primary sprocket bearings are toast. About ready to truck it to the local HD and hope they can tell me wtf is wrong.

Anyone have an opinion before I do so?

I had a similar problem with my XB12S and my compensating sprocket had to be replaced along with my clutch cable.

There's a good deal of info around here about water getting into xb primaries and causing damage to the clutch basket. Most common result I've seen is bearing failure; i.e. inner race bearing. I had some noise from mine as well I suspected was the primary chain/flywheel nut (seems to come loose, service bulletin for that floating around as well), but ended up taking the clutch basket out and inspecting the inner race bearing as well as I had read around here that it can cause noisy operation.
