I'm having a couple of problems with my 2002 Buell Blast. I got all of my mechanical issues sorted out, now all I have left are my electrical problems. Hopefully Minor.

1. My turn signals are acting up.
When I flip the switch either way the lights on that side will light up instead of blinking. Also There is a slightly loud buzzing sound that comes from the flasher relay when I turn them on. So I think the best solution for that problem is to replace the relay.

2. This is the one that I'm more confused over: My tail light(running light/brake light) wasn't working. So I replaced the bulb. Now the running light works fine, but the filament for the brake light isn't lighting up. Any Ideas? I tried looking along the wiring, but this is my first bike so it all looks like a complex puzzle to me. So if you have any tips or suggestions please let me know. I don't want to end up paying hundreds of dollars for something I can possibly fix myself.
thanks

I think you are on the right track with the flasher relay.

For the tail light, check all the fuses. I'm not sure if the brake light is different then the running light. Then check the brake light circuit, which will be a LOT easier with a schematic than by eye.

And it could be a bad replacement bulb. You can check for a low ohm reading (10 to 30 ohms, I'm too lazy to do the math right now) on the bulb base for both paths (tail light filiment, brake light filiment).

To what Reep says.

Take your flasher out, and take it to an auto parts store. They should be able to match it up. And having noticed your other thread, the worst that can happen is when the dealer gets your other one, you will have a spare on hand.

Find your rear brake light switch. With a volt meter, turn the ign on (after confirming the acc fuse is good). One of the wires to the switch should have 12V to it. If so, you have power to the switch. Plug that wire back in where it was, and apply the brake. You should now have 12V to the other prong. If so, the switch is good, and the problem is between the rear switch and ground.

As Reep says, the new bulb may be bad. The actual ohm reading is not as critical as confirming a complete path through both filaments.

You can take the bulb out, and measure voltage at the socket. With ign on, one contact in the socket should have 12V. The other will be for the brake light. Apply the brake, and check for voltage.

Basically Power to the switch/power out of the switch/power to the bulb/power through the bulb/to ground.

Hope this helps, Dave

Awesome, now I have some stuff to go on. Thanks guys. I noticed today that one of the two metal prongs (the one on the left) that the bulb inserts against and contacts is bent in away from the bulb a little bit. I'm going to go out in a minute and see if I can pull it forward a bit and see if that may be the problem.

Okay, success story -ish. I used some tweezers to pull that prong I was talking about forward. And it worked! So now I have working running and brake lights! And my flasher relay comes in on Thursday. But now I've found another problem,

Even though my relay is bad, my blinkers still light up(solid). Well three of them. All but my back right. So I switched bulbs from one of the working ones. The bulb was fine. I guess I'll just have to get a voltometer, or whatever its called. and trace this one back.

Hooray! One issue solved!

Since the flasher may be bad, the problem could be that the turn signal that is not lighting could have a bit more resistance than the other 3, so that bulb is not lighting.

The voltmeter would be a multimeter on the DC volts setting. My bad for
being 'generic' in my description. They are $18-20 at Ace Hardware or Radio Shack. A handy bit of kit, as the British say. Something worth having.

Update, and more questions. Alright, I got the new flasher and hooked it up and now my blinkers flash again. So the only thing now that is keeping me from getting my inspection and finally allowing me to ride without the fear of being pulled over is my one, not working turn signal. I haven't yet checked the amps on that one. I did however take it apart and make sure all wired are where they need to be. I think I'm going to suck it up and buy a new set of turn signals and be done with it. Does anyone know where I can find a set of stock Blast turn signals. Or anything compatible that I can just plug in. Thanks

John, if you have a 12v test lamp, like from an auto parts store, or your voltmeter, you can check whether you're getting power to that turn signal. A test lamp might draw enough current to actually flash, too. Make sure you're getting power to that light, before swapping it out.

Ok not getting power to my hot wire on the back right side. I don't know where the problem is. Does anyone know if it is possible to run both of my back blinkers off of the back left wiring???

Johnglover, hey I had a similar problem with my 07 Blast. Check under the plastic and trace the wires back a little. One wire was broken just about an inch from the connections to the right signal. I just stripped both ends, twisted them together and soldered the wire back. A little electrical tape and you should be in business without buying new turn signals and still having the problem. Hope that this helps.
