I have a chance to pick up a 2003 XB9R that needs engine work. Due to an oil line pinch it needs a new rear cylinder and piston, stator, and rotor. Rather than fix up the current engine, I'll probably just throw a diff engine in.

My question what year engines will work with the easiest "plug and play" Obviously an 03 engine will work but what is the highest year engine I can go to without changing anything else? Are there any differences that would make me want to go with a newer year?

I would say '05 to be safe and '07 with minor mods.

Thx for the reply.

Does it matter what model? As far as I know all the models engines are the same just diff setups/wheel bases. e.g. Can I throw a 05 XB9SX engine in or does it have to be an R? (Obviously a 9R and 12R are diff)

For each given year, there was only two motors, a 9 and a 12. Only thing different between a 9SX motor and a 9R is the timing cover will say Lightning or Firebolt.

Sweet, thanks guys

Is there anything else I need to know about the engine swap or is it just taking the old out and putting the new in?

If I used the existing harness, ECM, and headers/muffler I shouldn't have to do any tuning (or very little tuning) right? Granted the new engine doesn't have any defects
