Airborne,

Special Forces, huh. It would seem that while in the 8th we worked for the same guy. What the Army and AF working for one man you ask. This is what S(pecial) O(perations) S(quadron) stands for.

What a lively discussion on A/F guages vs. Dynos. Hope the EPA does not see this! Next thing you know we will all be in the shop every year. With a sniffer up the pipe, an eye on the guage, and a inspector watching the dyno numbers.

The above was all tounge in cheek......

Odyssey Kolors makes a new airfilter kit for X1. It is featured in the latest issue of Cafe-Racer magazine.

Odyssey 1
Odyssey 2
Ddyssey 3

The kit is called "Snake Cover". It includes carbon covers, race air filter and turn signals. Price is said to be 3850 FF here, so about US$550. Eurocomponents in the USA (official dealer for Odyssey Kolors products) should know more about it (availability, price in the USA,...). Usual disclaimer applies : my only link with Odyssey Kolors is that we are from the same country. :-)

On an unrelated subject -- Does anyone know where in the U.S. I can buy that cool-looking white stripe graphics kit pictured above? I think it would look great on my black '00 M2.

Chuck:

That white stripe graphics is a 99' Race Stripe. The 00' Race Stripe has 2 equal white stripes.

Are those turn signals in the covers? Hopefully the folds are magazine induced not manufacturing induced J.

Chuck,

You can't buy the 'stripe' bodywork unless you own one with the proper serial#; Buell's trying to keep the stripes original.

You could have it painted though...

A message from Eurocomponents about the snake-cover kit:

------
Dear Mr. Randall,

Thank you for your interest in Eurocomponents' products.

Aircleaner and left side covers for X1s are made out of carbon fiber and come
in a clear-coated finish, so you do not need to paint them, and they are
ready for installation. Kit includes a smaller aircleaner cover (made by
Screamin' Eagle) and a special air intake on the left side cover, which
provides more air to the rear cylinder for better cooling. Both covers follow
the lines of the tank for a super-smooth look. Both sides feature built-in
turn signals for a sharper look.

Complete kit is $ 664.20

Please remember to check our NEW PRODUCTS section periodically, since we have
new products coming out almost every month.
Let us know if we can be of further help.
Kind regards.

Anyone here have experience using the Crossroads " Mali" performance intake air cleaner set-up ? It is 5 3/4" in diameter and made nicely out of billet aluminum. Matches nicely with their breather set-up. Let me know. Thx

Hi,

Think this is close to the right area. Please I don't want to start a "OCTANE THREAD" but I would like to know if anyone is using any type of Octane Booster, and if there is any preference by HD Buell. The gas here in El Paso is not real good, the best you can get is 91, and the pump I usually pull from is usually a single hose, which means I'm getting probably half 91 and half 86.

Any suggestions?

Arvel

Luckily, there is a Pure station that sells 110 octane 76 race gas. The bike likes it, a lot. The great thing is, the price is $3.24/gallon. It stays that price no matter how regular piss-grade gas costs. 76rules

HELP i was taking apart the carb (CV-40)and when i took top off, out popped a metal collar (part number 58 in the exploded view in the Buell service manual). there seems to be no mention of it in the text. it seems to fit in the top of the plastic spring-guide but nothing holds it in??? does anyone know exactly where it goes, and what does it do?

I have a simple question... I searched the archive and can only find snippets of information and am having trouble putting them together... Help.

I am looking for an aesthetic change to the factory airbox on my '00 M2. I don't want to increase the power, or make this thing a major project. Heck, I don't even care if I take a minor power hit.

So, if I put on the Buell race airbox kit, or one of the other cool looking devices with butterfly valves and whatnot, do I need to worry about any of the following?

Concerns:
============
1) More moisture being sucked into engine shortening life. Several people have posted about riding the race kit box through downpours with no stalls, so that much at lest does not appear to be an issue.
2) Oil dribbles, leaks, etc... I'm a little confused about when and why people have the need for the puke cans. My stock M2 airbox has no oil dribbles (that I found anyway).
3) Screwing up the tune of the current setup. I don't want to mess with rejetting, retuning, etc.
4) Roasting my knee on the airbox (I'm 6'2" and take up a lot of space).
5) Annoying the neighbors with noise if I want to leave for work at 6 AM.

Again, I don't care about improving performance, but I don't want to screw up the tuning or lower reliability. Any Guru's want to share?

Bill

Well, I ain't a guru, but I'll throw in my .02 ...

1) Most air cleaners offer enough protection that the motor won't drown out. I'd be real surprised if you shortened your engine life even if it did ingest a little water once in awhile.

2) You really want all that nasty blow-by being sucked into the intake tract? Talk about water in the intake, this is a much bigger source than the occasional rain storm. Plus, it costs 1.5-2hp over a wide range by my measurements.

3) Jetting properly is a good idea even if you don't change the air cleaner. Your motor will be happier and probably live longer. It's very simple and cheap to do and you can get damn close on the first try, just follow the tips on the ATC site.

4) Air cleaners don't get particlarly hot, but at 6'2", you need to make knee clearance a big consideration in your shopping, just for comfort purposes.

5) They're only more noisy than the stock box when you open the throttle a bunch. You'll get an intake honk kind of noise. It's not that loud anyway.

Best of luck,
AW

Thanks Aaron... the fog is beginning to clear... I guess the puke can upgrade is a different job then the airbox change, which is a different job then the re-jet, but all are attached more or less at the same point, so you might as well do one when you do the other.

On the stock airbox, does it just re-ingest this blow by stuff with the incoming air? Where is this oil coming from? (I am not very familiar with the twins).

I read the ATC jetting instructions, and was right with them until they started talking about drilling holes in things. Removing the carb made me a little nervous as well, but I would probably do it. Are there any other known approaches that don't require holes being drilled in carb parts?

Anybody with the buell race kit airbox care to comment on the knee spacing thing? Obviously it can't stick out any further, but does it stick further back? I don't have much clearance between the stock box and my knee now...

In summary, it sounds like my original concerns are not an issue except for possibly comfort... but that there are a couple of other things I probably want to consider doing (rejetting, adding the puke bottle).

What is the proper name for the puke bottle thing... is that the breather, or is the breather just another name for the airbox?

So many questions...
Bill

Bill - The CF intake does eat up some knee room to the rear. I am 6'3"(36" inseam) and need all the knee room I can get. The breadbox is great for knee room. The other(and probably best)alternative is either a Force or Yodude intake system. They flow forward and allow maximum knee space. But again, $200.-$250. For around $40.(K&N) and $10.(breather filter) you can gut your airbox and get good performance. But as Aaron stated, any mods to intake really should involve jetting. Good Luck troop
