I'm thinking that my battery is a bit down on power and wanted to try to verify that using my service manual. I hadn't realized I needed a specific electrical diagnostic manual for these 'services'.

Does anyone have the basics for load testing the battery and testing the charging system? I tried searching the vault but couldn't come up with anything definitive.

I'm getting 14+ volts while the bike is running across the terminals but the battery seems to be settling down to the low 12 volt range after sitting for a while. It's a new 2008 bike that I bought back in August so I'm thinking the battery might be going flat.

Thanks.

What kind of symptoms are you getting that makes you think the battery is low and what model bike? Some 2008 models have specific battery related issues that can be fixed free by the dealer.

2008 XB12XT.

Sometimes in cold it struggles to get that first crank. I've cleaned up the grounds and they're solid.

Also after each ride if I put it on the tender it takes an hour or so to switch from 'charging' to 'storage' mode. It just seems odd to me, and I want to be sure everything is within spec.
