Hi all,

This is my first post here on Badweb. I've been reading the site for some time (and been a member for a little bit), but never posted because all of my questions have been answered with a little searching and I really didn't have anything useful to add to the discussion. But, I've got a problem I can't solve on my own.

I have a 06 Uly, and the fan stopped running. I determined that the fan does actually work (both with a direct connection and with ECMSpy forcing it to run). My temperature sensor checks out Ok from the owners manual tests, and the temperatures reported on ECMSpy make sense. The ECM just won't turn on the fan. I bought a new ECM from Buell, put it in, did a TPS reset, and the bike won't run at all unless I am cranking the throttle off and on constantly. Let go of the throttle and it dies. I put the old ECM back in, reset the TPS and the bike runs fine (just no fan). I pulled the airbox and made sure that the idle screw is actually making contact correctly and that I am turning it far enough out to fully close the throttle. Is there something I'm missing, or did I have the bad luck to get two bad ECMs? And if I did get another bad ECM, can I take the ECM to the dealer and have them confirm it's bad?

Thanks

Sounds like the new ECM never had a TPS reset done once it was installed on your bike. If you reset your TPS, you should be good to go.

thanks for the suggestion. I tried to do the TPS reset again and the bike still won't run. Maybe I'm doing something wrong. Here's what I did.

1) hooked my laptop to the bike, fired up ECMSpy, turned on the bike and hit the online/offline button and got the little window showing open loop.

2) ran idle screw out until the throttle was fully closed (and TPS showed zero) and then about 5 turns past that.

3) snapped the throttle closed 3 or 4 times.

4) hit reset TPS button on the diagnostics tab. At the bottom of the screen it said resetting TPS and then TPS reset.

5) went to the ECM runtime tab and ran idle screw in until the TPS was at 5.1% and 4.6 degrees.

6) tried to start the bike.

Is there something I missed? This is the first time I've used ECMSpy, but I do know my way around computers pretty well.

Thanks.

I had the same problem when I replaced the ECM on my 07 Ulysses. My defective ECM had different symptoms, but the new one did exactly the same thing as yours when I installed it and did the TPS reset - the engine barely started and wouldn't run unless the throttle was being blipped. In order to fix it I had to load the eprom map from the original ECM into the new one. I had it saved from when I first got ECMSpy. Once that was done, along with a new TPS reset, it ran like new, and has ever since.

Thanks. I guess I've got a few more things to learn how to do with ECMSpy.

That fixed it!! I copied the eeprom from the old ECM to the new one, reset the TPS and it started right up. I guess the factory assumes that a replacement ECM will be reflashed at the dealer installing it, so the data on it isn't checked (or the ECM may not hold the data in memory indefinitely without a power source). Anyway, thanks a lot Chrisp.

Since the same ECM type is of dual use for XB9 and XB12 (first time in 2005 IIRC), the ECM has to be flashed with the appropriate data before use.

The ECM's EEPROM will not lose any data without power supplied.

Regards,
Gunter

Gunter,

Thanks for the information on the newer ECMs. I don't think the fact that the 9s and 12s use the same ECM is widely known (I didn't see any mention of it when I searched Badweb or the web in general).

And, my ECM saga continues. After the reflash, my bike runs great (ridden it about 30 miles), but I'm getting the check engine light coming on on a regular basis. The ECM isn't showing any codes, so I assume that all of the bike's components are working correctly. I think I just have some setting out of adjustment.

I suspect that the bike is running lean because of the K&N air filter I added just before I installed the new ECM. I plan to spend some time this weekend with ECMSpy checking the fuel maps to see if anything looks wrong. Will the check engine light come on due to a lean condition?

Thanks,

Steve
