does anyone know if you have to drop the engine on a 97 M2 to replace the rocker box gaskets?

No, you don't have to drop the engine. It isn't easy getting access to all of the screws, or easy to get the rocker boxes out between frame tubes, but it can be done.

Do yourself a favor and pick up a service manual.

I did my 2000 m2 with out removing the engine. It was tight and I had to grind down a couple tools but it still works (3000 mi. ago).

I have a 97 M2 and did it without dropping the engine. The shop manual still helps clarify certain procedures. I cut down the short side of some misc allen wrenches to get at the allen screws easier.

I did my rocker box gaskets without dropping the engine (2000 M2). I trimmed up an allen wrench and took my time. Problem solved.

-and definately pick up the shop manual.
