My xb12r main shaft outer bearings have went out. I just broke the case down and removed one of the outer bearings from the left side and it has a lot of play and noise so it is bad. After removing and inspecting everything I found where the main shaft fits into the main drive/5th gear on the right side of the case has no inner bearings. The manual shows that bearings should be there, am I looking at the manual wrong or did the factory screw up? Here are some pictures maybe it will make it more clear of what I am asking here is the main drive and 5th gear I am sure there should be some needle bearings in the main drive where the main shaft goes in Close up of the main drive here is the picture of the bad main shaft bearing http://www.brightok.net/~barryd/1%20005.jpg (Message edited by mdd134 on May 30, 2008) |

My M2 had needle bearings in there. A PITA to push in and out as well. Mine were destroyed, but the cages were still in there. You don't even have the cages. That makes no sense. How did the thing ever work at all without banging all over the place? How is the surface of your transmission output shaft? |

I now have everything removed and the end of the shaft is damaged, but I think I can reuse it because it is only at the very end. The main drive is gone, it really ate in to where the bearing should be and it is discolored blue from over heating. The only thing I can think of is that the counter shaft took all of the stress. the only reason I pulled it apart was because one of the bearings was making a lot of noise, then felt the main shaft and it felt broke because it had so much movement. I called Buell and they sell the main drive with bearings pre installed and the oil cap seal for 114.00 so thats not bad at all I will try and take pictures of the shaft and wear spot on the main drive. thanks for the help |

Illustration from online S1 manual might aid discussion. Sure wish we had an online XBike manual.

Yup. He is missing #20, and the other #20. Which means his #21 and #27 are probably toast. I have a nice pitted 27 here on my desk, along with a #11 and a #22. They make a heck of a clunk when I drop them. That is a handy diagram... Wonder where those needle bearings went? Probably the same black hole the oil in my KLR-250 got sucked into |

here are some pictures you can see where the shaft wore and cause the main drive to get very hot. I am going to reuse the main shaft because there is not that much wear on it. since the bearings were pressed in to the main drive I would still have the cages but there are none, nor anything in the bottom of the case when I split it. So the bearings were not installed from factory. I think the way it lasted so long was the counter shaft took all the stress since the gears mesh on it. thanks for all the help I now have my parts ordered and I should be on the road in no time.
