Jim M,
(Too many Jims with turbo's on here guys!) Is your's undersized, or do you think they all are? I thought that was the whole principal of having variable vanes, so that you got a turbo that was correctly sized (in effect) across the whole usable rev range?

Peter, I think that we have all the same turbo . The person at Aerodyne told me there is no way to change turbine housings or compressor wheels, thats the only way to make turbo flow more air besides just getting a bigger unit.A larger turbo does exsist but it is physically larger and it would not fit.
Look at JW's dyno sheet, I think it proves that these things are on the small side. Power drops off after 4000 to 4500RPM ,it should make more power until redline. The exhaust side ,turbine, is restrictive ,that makes for fast spool up but it limits the potential.
The person at Aerodyne also said if you ran a 1440cc motor(like FMJ) the turbo would over speed and "blow up".That means that the turbo has to be too small or right on the ragged edge because that's just an increase of less than 20% displacement and the turbo cannot support it.
That said, I still can't figure out that cam/vlv timing ,in the paper I mentioned.
By the way Jim W. nice power, if nothing else I should be able to get many grins with that, if I can reproduce it.

JM,

There's a guy local to me here in Arizona named TJ, from Eastside Performance (if he's still in business). He's an Aerocharger freak and has won the Daytona HP shootout several times with a Aerocharger. Maybe you should give him a call and pick his brain. He's never turned me down for information.

Does Aerocharger make turbos for any of the 120+HP Japanese IL4's?

Blake ,I believe any of the Jap/big inch HD turbo kits ,RB Racing and the like are using Garrett turbos with adjustable wastegates.
See what they say
........"we do not use stupid ass variable vane low cfm rated turbos that were meant for low speed diesels or snowmobiles"

VR,I think JW's drop off is something else entirely. On my dyno runs HP was still climbing in steep curve when we shut down at 6500rpm.Afraid to stress engine any more than that as it was pushing 160hp.A stock big twin isn't gonna make too much more hp/rpm than 5000 anyway.

Blake,

Dunno but Aerocharger advertise turbos for the metrics. Here's one link but they could be out of business as far as I know Dr Turbo.

For a race bike the variable vane approach may not be optimum, but for street bikes it probably is, no?

Blake ,I think you're on to something. I just talked to a person with Dr. Turbo, he said he's had 6 kits on backorder. He does not think he'll be able to get any from Aerocharger until the end of the year. He said there is different built "53000" series Aerochargers that supply different and higher CFM's for the Honda 929's and such.Same turbo ,different impellers and maybe turbine housings. So you were right about the Jap bikes with the Aerochargers. Still wonderin' about that cam info link.

Tj's is the man to talk to or better yet to work on and tune a turbo bike. Too bad he's so far away.

JW, JM talked to TJ
Cams;
Stock's best for street sleepers/hooligans.(I'm thinking Sportster "S" cams)
Racers that need power higher in the RPM range will need more agressive profiles that sacrifice mid range torque for higher RPM power.(Redshift 585"s?)
Quote of the day by TJ "turbo motors don't pump aluminum they pump air" (concerning questions about raising the CR)

decisions, decisions

FMJ, I didn't ask about turbo size diffs.I guess I should have. I think no one has any available.

Ran into this guy that has a Kawi...

he writes...

Turbobikes are fun, my bike makes 258hp amd 181ft
lb torque (EFI-Intercooled), the turbo is a 143/300 (largest of the 5300 series) The turbo has the exhaust scroll ported and the newer style vane- controller with an 8lb spring. I have the compressor map that shows max flow of 340cfm

With a Aerocharger, thats some flow!I was told mine is maxed out at 210 CFM. FMJ, When I asked (Aerodyne) what a person would need to support 150-160 HP I was told 270 CFM's. I still have just sketchy information on Aerocharger flow maps ,CFM's and sizes.I would like to see a full blown(!) chart and figures on all the combinations. I think Corky Bell(Bell Engineering) out of Texas would help, He said he had some info, but I don't like asking for free stuff.

Was adding a second bike to my Progressive policy and they asked if it had "major performance modifications." I asked what that was and why? They said "turbo-charging, super-charging or nitro, any of which we will not insure".
Do you turbo-guys see this on yours or are you all off-road anyway?

The insurance company told me that years ago. I simply told them I didn't have a turbo on my bikes.

John Sachs, haven't heard anything from you in a long while.I was going through the archives and saw you had talked about a couple of different aerochargers--a 110 and a 128??Can you enlighten me?And are they still for sale? What comes from aerocharger in the stock Buell set=up.I looked over mine and can see no identifying #'s.Thanks, Jim Higgins.
