Hi, I noticed my 12R's v-twin "sneezes" sometimes when I rev it. Guy at the HD dealer told me its normal in V-Twins, and that the engine will not stall. Well today in freeway traffic I had to rev my engine to prevent stall, and it "sneezed" and then killed itself. Lucky I had the clutch pulled in other wise I wouldve suffered an uncommfortable jerky stop. Does anyone have some words of wisdom on this?
Thanks,
ADAM

ALWAYS let the bike warm up for one full minute before moving it.

Make sure the idle is set somewhere close to 1000 (Most people like to get the bike HOT then set the idle JUST low enough so it doesn't hang up on the way down). Me... I set my idle at about 850-900 and it seems to work well. I just don't blip my throttle off idle is all...

Timing can have a factor.

TPS setting can have a factor.

I agree with Donald, check static timing and try not to blip the throttle like you would with a carb there is no need to the bike has FI. ... Also the XB series of bikes are very lean down low and there are a few issues in the open and closed loop transition area. When you blip it moves in that zone. ... Hope this helps. ...Terry

IMO the BRAIN BOX should be remaped so the fuel mixture is 12 to 1 from idle to WOT !!!

"IMO the BRAIN BOX should be remaped so the fuel mixture is 12 to 1 from idle to WOT !!! "

Lafayette, I think this is not a good answer.

For one thing, during closed loop with DDFI, it is impossible to keep the bike reliably at anything other than 14.7:1. The output response curve of the single wire narrowband sensor prevents this from being otherwise, as the sensor is highly non-linear. Almost a full 0.5 volt of the 0-1 volt response is centered at 14.7:1, so it is easy for a closed loop system to hold it there, and virtually impossible for it to do otherwise. Even if it could, you'd have to get a new sensor every 6 months as they drift with age. The resolution at 13:1 and 12:1 is just not there. You can only get approximately there by looking at voltage ballistics, not absolute values, with this sensor. And while that is theretically possible, I don't believe that DDFI has that kind of computing going on.

But even if you could use it to hold 12:1, you would not want to. Keeping a bike at anything other than 14.7:1 in the cruise domain is a waste of gas and a major unnecessary contributor to pollution. If you need more power in cruise, you merely have to twist your wrist and it will be there.

There are two reasons for running richer than stoich...one, there is more power when every air molecule can find a fuel molecule, and rich better ensures this. Two, a richer engine runs cooler. In the cruise domain, the waste heat isn't significant enough to warrant trying to get that extra cooling, and as indicated before, more power is obtainable merely by twisting the wrist.

At throttle settings above 60% or so, dialing the engine richer starts to become a good idea. At WOT, richer than at 60% is a good idea. Presumably, one is at WOT because one is demanding max power, so the rich A/F setting to support that is warranted. And at max power output conditions, the waste heat issue becomes significant, so additional cooling is a good thing.

But Buells don't like 12:1. Typically, max power is between 13:1 and 13.5:1 on these engines. I really don't understand why some engine types like it richer for max power, and some like it leaner. But for this particular engine configuration, I guarantee that you will make less power at 12:1 than you will at 13:1.

HI Al

How come my spark map with DL only goes up to 6524 RPM when the engine revs much higher ?

Is there something missing there somehow ?

you can see my standard map at http://buelltuning.free.fr/ecu.htm

if you had some answer for me that would help...!!

regards

fabrice

Yea, but you can't run DDFI on a wideband sensor. And again, even if you could, 12:1 isn't where you want to be on a Buell.

One COULD run a a bike on a fully closed loop system from idle to redline with a wideband sensor and hold it anywhere you want anywhere in the curve under any circumstances. Computer power in the ECMs certainly isn't the limit. But to do it right, you'd need to get your high $$ sensor calibrated or replaced fairly often. I know many cars are now using them, some in conjunction with a narrowband sensor as well. But they get to amortize their more complicated, sensor rich, systems $$ over many more vehicles, and they still aren't cheap if you ever have to replace the wideband sensor (or other sensors, for that matter).

Personally, I think the Buell ECM is a darned good one. The combination of open and closed loop operation and the learning mechanisms are pretty cool and work darned well these days, and the system is simple but elegant. It was a rough start in 99 on the tubers, but DDFI today works pretty darned good, IMHO.

Especially now that we can tune it!!

Fabrice,
That is a good question. It goes higher on later ECMs. What year is your bike?

Al

My bike is 2003....the funny thing is that when I used the DL the first time....while learning to use it without touching the map...I actually reflashed it with my map that I had download previously..and that removed the rev limiter (even so this was not what I was trying to do at all!)..
The bike now revs up higher than 8000 rpm and I now have to be careful...

But I dont want to fiddle around too much for the time being

Any how, the funny thing is that the fuel map goes past 8000 rpm !!!!!

You may not have much time but if you could check my maps at http://buelltuning.free.fr/ecu.htm maybe you would have a better idea...

Maybe it is a program Bug...and I will call Giamberto when he comes back from Italy...

Bye for now...

If it is ok for you, I couls also send you my map as a .blo file so that you could check it...

Need not say.... I would be happy to send you some money should it be a requirement.

Best regards

The French Buell stunters are invading BadWeB and they have EFI mapping in 3-D! To arms! To arms! joker

Wait. He has money and is offering to send it! joker

This direct link stuff has me more enthused about getting a new Buell than ever. That coupled with the Uly test ride I was fortunate enough to enjoy last weekend (thanks Jay!), and I'd say I'm on an unavoidable collision course towards XBike ownership. Woohoo!

The Techcno research software has helped me greatly...I also did also reset the tps for a few guys around here, and even one tonight after work after installing a race ecm, all this free of charge, you can count a good unfair 70 euros here for a tps reset. I'd rather have the very few Buell Guys around here come to see me and have a drink...

Gues who has also invaded de Buell Passion Web site ... in France

UP two post my question was (which I forgot)

Why does the spark map only go to 6500 rpm when the fuel map goes higher than 8000
