Anyone got a lead on a good summer jacket. Looking for serious hard armor, but mesh. I need something like that to wear under my rain gear that has no armor...That's why preferably mesh, it breathes... So far all the light jackets that I have found have "padding".
Thanks

The Fieldsheer mesh jackets have hard plastic and padding in the shoulders and elbows, just padding in the back.

I wear the Fieldsheer mesh jacket in summer.

Pros: Though it is heavy, I feel it is cooler than leather. Paid around $100

Cons; I do not care for the zip in liner. Air passes through it too easily. I carry a wind shirt and lite fleece for cooler weather. It is hard to get the bugs out of the mess<G>.

I'm in agreement on the Fieldsheer Titanium Air Mesh jacket. It's got great ventilation and is comfortable in pretty much anything down to about 65 degrees. This one doesn't have a liner and is very lightweight.

I got mine at NewEnough.com for a good price, but it looks like they aren't carrying them now.

An interesting bit of trivia about those mesh jackets...

I had an aborted attempt to make it to deals gap this year... rained out. I had my Joe Rocket armored non mesh nylon, my buddy on the SV650 had a mesh jacket.

We got absolutely soaked, and it got very cold, but he (with the mesh) actually was warmer then I was. I got wet and stayed wet and cold, soaked through and through. He got wet, but whenever we hit a dry sunny patch, he was dry again within 15 minutes or so of riding again. I just stayed wet and cold.

That's a function/advantage of a mesh jacket that I hadn't thought of. I guess because I haven't been caught in the rain since I bought it.

I personally have a Joe Rocket "Phoenix" mesh jacket and I've been pretty happy with it. My only complaint is that when I tighten the wrist closures they get bunched up and my summer gloves don't want to fit over them.

Another thing to note- HD is coming out with it's own line of mesh jackets this spring. I've only seen one of them so far but it appeared to be much nicer than my Joe Rocket. I *think* the price will be around $200.

I'll second (or third, or forth) the recommendation for the Fieldsheer jacket. I've got a Joe Rocket Phoenix, and it's nice, but it's obviously a first generation product. The Fieldsheer mesh jacket addresses most of my concerns with the Phoenix - primarily, it comes with CE rated armor (the Phoenix just has foam), the neck is finished with neoprene (much better), and adding the liner in makes it a 3-season jacket down here in FL rather than a 1.5 season jacket.

The Phoenix 2.0 does address some of the complaints with the earlier version, but the Fieldsheer is still a nicer product.

Note: these are one-use jackets. They'll work for one big spill, but will probably need to be replaced after that. This is not a big deal, just something that should be considered.

Check out the prices at NewEnough. http://www.newenough.com

They carry Joe Rocket, FirstGear and a couple of others. Great prices, quick shipping, good reputation. My FieldSheer is great in the high heat and humidity of Memphis Summers. NewEnough no longer carries them but I imagine they can be had elsewhere.

I have a Teknic mesh jacket which is decent. Just bought a Joe Rocket "Dry Tech" liner to use under it. It will zip into Joe Rocket jackets but can be worn under anybody's jacket. It is windproof and is supposed to be rainproof. I've been wearing it riding to work for the last week or so. It's been 55 deg. F in the morning and 85 deg. F when headed home. The liner worked great in the morning and easily fit in my tank bag along with my other stuff for the ride home. ~$30 list price and well worth the money.

Hey everyone i just got my new joe rocket pheonix in the mail but i think i might have orderd a size to large. Maybe im just used to the snug fit of my leather. So how does everybodys mesh fit on the loose side or more on the snug side. Mine seems kinda baggy under the armpits at the top of the arms, and im at the tightest the waist adjusters will go.

I have a Vanson leather jacket and another the same design from them in mesh. Although they are the same size, they do fit differently with the mesh one seeming (overall) more loose as you describe. I chalked it up to the difference in materials, as they both "look" the same when on.

I originally bought a Phoenix 3.0 (red) in XL. It's the right size for me, but I did notice it was a bit baggy in the arms. I think it's fine since there might be times you would wear a sweatshirt under it...

Anyway, I wore the JR jacket about 6 times in three weeks and then ended up buying a First Gear mesh jacket that fits my needs a little better.

If anybody wants a red Joe Rocket Phoenix 3.0 (XL) that's less than a month old, let me know. $100 delivered.

Steve.

I just picked up a Joe Rocket armored mesh that I'm quite happy with. Got it for about half price, so it's probably last years inventory... Looks and feels good just the same.

Question - The armor pieces are replaceable. How often should they be replaced? Helmets should be replaced after 10 years whether or not you've had an accident. What about the pads in these jackets? (If more than a few years, I'll probably just want a new jacket anyway).

i ride with joe rocket blaster jacket leather non perf'd. I ride 60-110 degree weather and its just fine with or without the liner. Personally i think leather is the best but textiles do have there obvious pluses like cost and heat.
