You guys missed a nice impromptu track day yesterday. Murrae called and let me know they had the track reserved from 1pm-3pm Monday. Xen, Jim, Murrae, Scott and his son, Luis, and I were all out there.

We did about an hour of clockwise on the old route, then an hour of counterclockwise on the new route. Both lots of fun. I need to keep working on my body position. You'd be surprised how quickly you get tired out there. I had to take a few breaks just to drink something.

I'll post some photos later.

you don't need a track bike to do the Star School. The first year there was all kinds of bikes out there, even a few large BMW GS bikes and such.

Weekday track days are a hoot - Mondays are bad for me.

I'm starting to take off stock stuff and add a few racing parts to my (formerly my son's) SV650. Just another toy to play with in middleweight and club sport classes. Waiting for front suspension...

The 1125 is sitting - waiting for the next race day. The front master brake cylinder has a minor issue...may need to replace.

Time for an upgrade? I bet that new one from Erik Buell Racing works great.

Nick, I haven't seen your 1125 in quite a while. I'm told you have it all tricked out as a race bike. I'd like to check that out. I'm also interested in what you're doing to the SV. I got my son a 2005 SV650. Nice bike.

I'd prefer a brembo master -if available.
The Buell/Nissin Master Cylinder is a dealer item. Erik Buell Racing doesn't even carry this item.

CJ,

My 1125 isn't really tricked out...it has the full body, a belly pan, steering damper, and its been safety wired and prepped for the track (coolant etc.). The bike is otherwise stock. Last race day, I was running consistently as fast as I ran inconsistently last year... My next real upgrade is going to be suspension.

You should come out next race day and check out the Buell contingent. If you want to see a tricked out 1125, check out the "Zen" machine...chain drive, suspension, etc.

As for the SV, front suspension is way soft for aggressive riding. I just received new springs and an emulator from Race Tech - need to install. Also, the brake pads and standard touring tires need an immediate upgrade. It my project for this month. I should have it ready for the track by July.

Also, on the street front..., I almost became a Rt14 motorcycle statistic last weekend. I was coming up on slow traffic, stayed behind them for a little and the decided to pass...got into the passing lane... suddenly, the guy in the car decides he has found his turn-off and starts his left turn as I was coming up even with his back end. Holy Crap! I was in slow motion as I grabbed and held max brakes. I was actually bracing for impact. This happened on the BMW which has ABS. I doubt I could have modulated manual brakes - it happened that fast. I had inches to spare in front of tire.
...and if that wasn't enough, there were two guys on cruisers coming up behind me who were also in the passing lane and one of them skidded behind me in an panic and almost lost control. For me this was an ABS "save." The wife watched all this transpire as she did not come with me on the pass attempt - smart - women's intuition maybe?

Finally, how about those Blackhawks hockey fans...?!

Well, as a lifelong Flyers fan, I'm unhappy with the result.

I'd say good job on the braking and surviving. We had a similar experience on the High Road a few weeks ago, but instead of the guy cutting in front of us, we powered past him and he was flipping us off.

I have seen Zen's bike. It's pretty nice. I'll see about coming out to the next race weekend. I'm out of town for what I think is the next one, end of June. We'll see about July.

Had a nice ride to Farmington today for no apparent reason. Well, the 300+ butt-numbing miles were good practice for my upcoming trip to San Diego. Got 42mpg on the way up and 49 on the way back. Hmm...

No. Fifth gear doing pretty close to the speed limit. It's a 70 mile limit most of the way and I did 75 pretty steady. I think it must've been the wind.

Well, ever since I've had it, it's been getting sub-50mpg. I was kind of concerned about it because the Firebolt always got 50-55mpg even when I was really romping on it.

I have the comfort kit installed and they reflashed everything for that and I mentioned it to the guys at the 1K service. I made them change out my plugs at that service but none of that has affected my mileage. I have experimented by riding a whole tank with the cases off, only the topcase, only the sidecases, all of them on, etc. Doesn't seem to make a whole lot of difference.

I have 3K miles now. After my trip to San Diego next week, I'll take it up for it's 5K and see how that goes.

Well, The smaller displacement of the 984 engine could account for some of that difference. Weight would have an effect; as would air resistance. The Taller gearing in the 1203 helps, but not that much. Sub-50 doesn't seem that far out of reach. I never saw over 50 on my TT until I had had it over a year. Last August in Colorado was the first time in fact. At 80ish MPH I don't see more than about 49. What I do like about the 12 is mine always gets about 42. Its like clock work. Hell I got 41 on the track yesterday.

I noticed a gain in mileage as the miles on the odometer increased... Till maybe 15k or so, it hasn't really gone up since then.

I would like to get the right side scoop and header shroud for my TT. I have also thought about getting the headers wrapped, I heard that cuts much of the heat off your leg.

As another reference...my TT and the wife's SCG never get less than 48 and usually in the mid to upper 50s on longer trips on the highway. They both started getting good mileage early on and have improved slightly.

Well, I've arrived in San Diego. The ride was interesting... to me.

First, we left fairly early to arrive before it got TOO hot. Didn't quite make it. On the ride out, I got to that truck stop at mm39 on I-40 and averaged 48mpg. I was pretty happy. Proceeding west, I stopped next at Holbrook, AZ and since I'd been on the bike for about three hours solid and was also starving to death, I decided to take a break. Denny's appeared to be the only restaurant, so we went in. Took FOREVER! After about an hour break, we were back at it. Took a southerly route from Holbrook to Heber and then Payson. The ride into and out-of Payson is super nice. In fact, the first 20 miles or so out of Payson is freaking sweet! Lots of mountainous downhill curves, wide roads, wide open views. Amazing. Then it gets crazy hot as you approach town. There was some sort of brush fire along the side of the highway before we got there and everything was charred and smoldering. I felt bad for those firemen. I was pretty hot.

Upon arrival to the hotel, I couldn't even get my helmet off before I felt like I was melting. Literally sweat dripping off me just standing there. Found out it was 113F. WTF?!?

Today, rose early and left the hotel by 0630 to beat the heat. It was really nice out and there was a very pleasant cool breeze as we hit the freeway. Went down via Maricopa and Gila Springs before getting on the I-8 to California. Nice road leading into Gila Springs. Really nice. At 0900, it was cool, bright, and nobody on the road. Lots of new looking asphalt, nice and smooth, not too hot yet, and we just flew! It was sweet. It was like a rollercoaster for a bit, too with the little hills and ups and downs.

Upon getting on I-8, it was super windy most of the way out. Hit a couple of Border Patrol checkpoints in the middle of the desert. Weird. Air cooled bike, late morning heat, bumper to bumper traffic. I just turned it off until it was my turn to go. Pretty much the same after passing through Yuma. Once we got to the mountains west of San Diego, I as roasted.

The mountains are where it got fun again, though. We start climbing these mountains and there are all these signs about turning off your AC to save your car from overheating, and every tenth of a mile there are water stations for you to add water to your radiator. Weird, right? We're flying up this mountain. Angela was right on my ass with her little sports car. It is still windy as hell, and we're tearing ass around these mountain roads. Super fun. As we go up, we get to 4000 feet above sea level, and the temperature drops from 103F to 83F in about five minutes. I loved it and I think the bike did too. Again, coming down the other side, we flew. Following another BP checkpoint, I had to fuel up, though. Light came on about 30-40 miles before I expected it to. Turns out all that wind and all that tearing ass around the mountain shot my mileage to shit. Only did 37mpg for that leg. (Keep in mind it's still fully loaded in all three bags plus a huge duffle across the rear seat and a backpack on top of that. And my tank bag. And me. And my residual sweat. )

Anyways, get into San Diego and it's like 68F. Drastically different from my time at the pool yesterday in Scottsdale. Managed to get a free parking space for the bike, though. Told the bellman I'm a Hyatt employee and he told me how to get to the employee motorcycle parking in the lower level of the garage. Perfect spot! Angela is paying $24/night for self parking. (Valet would have been like twice that. )

Anyway, I'll have to see what I see around here.

I used to live in Yuma, and I always thought those BP checkpoints were a little odd. They used to ask us if we had fruits or vegetables that we would like to declare. kinda odd, but that drive is a beautiful one (once you get into the mountains) Have you ridden up to Julian? that is a pretty drive. It is a little town known for their pies up in the mountains there.

Unfortunately, my girlfriend's son will be here starting on Thursday for a month, and I probably wont be doing any long rides while he is here (mostly just commuting) but I will have to hit you guys up after he leaves and we can plan a ride or something.

OK, back from my trip. Went well. My mileage was very interesting. On the way out, it got progressively worse. I soon correlated that to my tire pressure. As I descended in altitude, my tire pressure was reduced and thus my mileage. I soon began checking and adjusting at every gas stop and it improved. On the way home, I got 50+ mpg for most of the trip. I had to bleed off tire pressure as I ascended to higher elevations.

The bike performed flawlessly. It was really loaded, too. I had all three bags pretty full. I weighed the contents to be sure I wasn't overstuffing them. 15 pounds each in the side cases and ten in the top box. Then I threw on the big duffle across the rear seat and bungeed it to the side cases and rear rack. On top of that, I had a backpack with some odds and ends in it. I also had a tank bag. I actually carried more stuff than my wife did in her car. It's a little two seater convertible, so the storage space is non-existent.

Overall, did about 1700 miles and really wore the center of the tire. Got to warm up the sides a bit on some of the more scenic roads. I'll have to take it to the mountains to wear out the sides a bit more!

Hope you guys all have a nice 4th!

Hello All...

At long last, I have the final information for the 2010 Southwest Buell Rally!

We decided to adjust the dates a bit from our initial plan in order to accommodate the racing schedule of several participants. Therefore, we will now have the rally the weekend of August 27, 28, 29 in Red River, NM ( http://www.redriver.org/ ).

Basic plan is to arrive on Friday with optional self-guided rides of the area, group ride Saturday (route to be determined) and then depart for home on Sunday (ideally via the scenic route). Saturday evening, we'll have a group dinner which I'm working on the details of right now.

We will be lodging at the Lifts West Condominium Hotel ( http://www.liftswest.com/ ). Our host, Billy Hurst, has arranged a discounted group rate for our group. You can call (505) 754-2778 or (800) 221-1859 to make your reservations. Be sure to let them know you're part of the "Southwest Buell Rally" and you'll get the preferred pricing. (I think it amounts to somewhere between 5% to 10% off the standard rates.) They have hotel room type singles as well as one, two, and three bedroom condos which could work out well for those interested in splitting costs. He quoted me $63 for a single, $130 for a 2BR/2BA condo, or $157 for a 3BR/3BA condo, plus tax.

We will have tee shirts and trophies, as always. We have had some rather small turn out the last couple years, so it would sure be nice to get everyone together for a brisk ride through Northern NM and Southern CO. I hope to see you all there!!

oooh. Fun. I am definitely going to try to attend (the only thing that is holding me back from full commitment at the moment is whether or not I will be allowed to take that Friday off from work.) How many bikes have attended in the past? I think it would definitely be a good ride and a great weekend.

We've had six on the low end to forty on the high end. I expect that this year, we'll get somewhere in the neighborhood of 15-20.

What type of work schedule do you get? I'm going up after work on Friday.
