kinda sucks, It just came to mind, thought I would share.
It was the end of september and I was at the dealer because they had an open house and the buell stunt team (dont recall their name) was there. i was actually looking at a sportster till then. Long story short my wife let me get the new cityX.

On my way home with my new scoot I stop at the light a couple of blocks from the dealer. The van in front of me just backs up about 10 feet and runs me over smashing my front fender and scratching my forks up. Call the the cops and get a ticket for no insurance! It all worked out and I ended up getting a nice chunk of change from the other guys insurance. but I sure was heart broken.

Hmmm. I would have thought there was a grace period between buying the bike and getting insurance. Sure, you wouldn't be covered by insurance, but I wouldn't have thought you'd get a ticket for it.

Generally, they write you the ticket for not having proof of insurance on you at the time. Easily taken care of when you appear with the paperwork showing you were covered or that your standard policy had you covered as a new vehicle purchase.

My dealer wouldn't let me take my bike without showing proof of insurance.

I think it's the law here in VA

Not sure about the law. I bought my bike through a dealer her in Virginia. He never asked for insurance on it but it was used, so that may have made the difference.

You only have to show proof of insurance if you finance through Harley Davidson credit.

I had my insurance company on call when I bought mine. All I had to do was leave a message on their machine (bought after 6pm) and I was covered.

I just bought a new Jeep Grand Cherokee last month. When I was shopping around I called my Ins Agent on a Friday to get a quote. My Agent told me if I pick up a new truck on the weekend I'm covered to drive it home and to just call on Monday with the Vin #

Insurance wasnt a problem, Just had my agent back date it. Just having your bike wrecked 10 minutes after you buy it, that sucks.

I don't know about other states, but in Pennsylvania, I would have needed proof of insurance (collision) if I would have financed the Buell. I also would have needed proof of liability insurance if I was going to drive it off of the lot. I had it delivered to my house, so I didn't need any insurance.

In Pa. if you finance you have to have proof of insurance to drive off the lot Its the law. If you pay cash and drive it off the lot its covered for 30 days. Either way your covered.

I do know when you finance a bike you are required by the finance company to have the insurance. I was not able to leave the dealership with my bike until I had proof of insurance.
