Any one tried the HID lighting conversion kits yet? i am thinking about the H7 HID conversion for the low beam on my lightning. they are around 250 bucks tho, so would sure like to hear from a current user first. thought the 4100K would be the best light output, and imagine the ballast will fit back of the flyscreen?

I haven't yet, but talked to a friend who put a 4 ballast system on a Honda and likes it. Said the prices here are good http://www.misterjung.com/. What systems were you looking at?

well my idea is to just convert the lo beam to HID. it is an H7 bulb on the lightning. the hi beam is switched on and off frequently as oncoming traffic dictates, so not a good candidate for HID. the lo beam will be run continuously, and should be a perfect place for an extremely bright, long lasting 4100 K light source. halogens are ok for hi beams and auxiliary lighting, but dont seem to last real long in continuous usage. have checked out a slew of websites, all are running in the 250 to 300 dollar range. am steering clear of anything listed as a color temperature of higher than 6000k as being a total fictional number. we are looking at lighting not nuclear fission. still like to find a review from a real motorcycle user.

Hmm, but when you switch to high beam, low turns off... You planning on modding the system so low stays on all the time?

There must be something going on with different bikes. I have a 12r and both lights are on at high beam

R's and S's lights act differently.

to update my quest. HID aftermarket kits are now outlawed in the USA. when decent lighting is outlawed, only outlaws will have HID. so you are reading a post from a very bad man. i have ordered my HID kit from an un-named socialist country to the north, where they trust there own citizenry with effective headlamps. so i am also a smuggler of illicit illumination. i will undoubtedly be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. oh, but wait i see an explanation; they are for offroad use only. so i shall just install them on my "show bike" now they are completely legal to import. the land of the nearly free.

and MRJUNG is long gone, he does not answer emails, and has burned some folks on other websites, most from ducati and other sportbike reviewed are still waiting for product.

They don't actually enforce laws up in Alaska do they? Just put the CityX guards over the lights to prove they're for offroad use.

The mrjung recommendation came with the comment that the prices are good but the customer service is so-so. That was from a purchase probably a year or more ago. Let us know how your show bike system works out!

The aftermarket HID kits have always been illegal according to Federal DOT standards. They are illegal on the basis of Alteration of factory approved lighting, in otherwords lighting that was DOT approved at the time of manufacture. There should be (but isn't AFIAK) a bylaw that allows you to update your lighting if a subsequent later model has the improved lighting. Soemthing to toss at SEMA to get on the band wagon about.

Hey FP-
I had a lighting kit on my VW GTI that I just sold. I think they were H7's...it was all philips components with a reman'd base. 4100K. Now the GTI had standard reflector lenses. So that meant that I probably blinded a lot of folks. Not too badly of course cause I pointed the lights down, but anyway!

They were great!!! Never had any problems with them of course as the bulbs will outlast most cars. The XB_R's headlights are ideal for HID's since they are projection lights. I haven't ever seen the light pattern on one though, do they have a sharp cutoff? If so then that is just what you need to make things work right. The cut-off will keep the light from bleeding off and blinding other drivers.

That is why you can't put different bulbs in your headlights and still be legal. You headlight assembly is tested for a specific type of bulb while it is inside your headlamp. And if it meets DOT's criteria then it is passed and gets the DOT stamp on it.

By using HID's-or even different sized Halogen bulbs (assuming you could MAKE them fit) your headlamp would be illegal because the focal lengths, wattage, etc. of the bulbs are different. By doing this you might, therefore, end up blinding oncoming drivers or providing inadequate lighting for yourself (well...some people just ARE that dumb!)

In closing if you can find a decent kit with decent components go for it...make sure your headlamps are properly aimed though please, and I would NOT recommend this really for the XB_S's unless you changed headlamps...

later,
Nick

well thanks for the tips. i AM planning to run HID in low beam housing of Lightning. yes i realize this may be a legal gray area. i do plan to carefully aim the assembley, and will make note of the beam's cutoff, etc. i have sufficient hi beam, with quantity three each 55 watt PIAA superwhite halogen bulbs on line. these do a pretty good job of left, right and far ahead illumination, especially at full darkness, and when roads are empty of traffic. what i am lacking is a good bright up close low beam, this i hope to rectify with the H7 HID conversion setup. will post results when possible.
