So I'll try to make this quick. I have an 05 firebolt, while riding the other day my bike started back firing and stuttering. Lights and power was cutting in and out. Eventually left me stranded at a light, got it back to my house and found the culprit to be a broken battery terminal. (it broke off from the battery not the cable) I switched the battery thinking that would be the end of it. Took it out today after changing the plugs, and while a mile or so away from the house the CEL comes on and the lights and Guage slowly stop working. I limp it into the driveway as it dies. I come here and research what it could be. I know the battery is good. It's brand new. Load test confirmed before this whole fiasco. I felt the main suspects would be the voltage regulator or stator I think it was. Anyways after research I find this 77 pin talk, I go outside at 1 AM because it bothers me that much, and I find that it's fried. I removed the connectors this morning and hard wired them, and still the same issue. I have no access to a multi meter right now. Any way to find out if it's the stator or VR or both? Any info would be greatly appreciated. First day registering and first post after lingering a bit after my buell purchase. You guys see great and very knowledgeable.

Pull the clutch inspection cover and do a sniff test. If the stator burned itself out(which is possible), it will smell burnt and terrible in there. That is an easy first step.

The very first thing you must do is buy a multimeter! Doesn't need to be a $1000 device, but I probably wouldn't recommend a $10 device either. Lots of decent stuff from the auto parts stores for $50. If $10 is all you can really spare, then it will probably give you an idea of working or not working, I think you can get a really basic device at harborfreight for about $6, often free with coupon and another purchase. They suck, they aren't accurate, and the blow up with the slightest mistake. But it will get the job at hand done.

This one looks decent, but again if money is real tight go with the $6 unit.

Thanks guys I'm going to buy a multi meter tomorrow. I'll also do the sniff test. I went ahead and bought a stator, but the more I study this I believe that it's probably the VR. I'll try to figure out how to test it through some research on here. Anybody wanna give me a run down on how I would go about said test? I'm mechanically sounds but electronics are not really my thing. Thank you in advance.

The burned 77 normally results in dead regulator. When I started to question my 03 I just decided I didn't want to fool with it and replaced it cause it was old. I found some cracks in the baçk of the thing after I took it off, so if it hadn't failed yet, it was going to fail.

The test for the VR? Eliminate all other possibilities first, then your VR is bad.

Well, maybe not word for word from the manual but that's pretty much it. The charging system is straightforward. Stator must provide sufficient AC voltage/current to the VR. VR must rectify AC to DC then provide no more than 15 VDC to the battery. You can test the stator, you can test the battery and you can be sure the wiring from beginning to end including grounds are in top condition. If all that's good, then you can say "yep, bad VR".

Bought a VR yesterday from harley, should be here on Thursday. Hopefully I've done all my troubleshooting work correctly. I'm almost positive it's correct, but I'm an idiot so we'll see. I also did the very accurate mistake proof "sniff test" of the primary and no burned smell. Anyways guys thanks for all the input and I'll update when I get the VR on the bike.
