I have an '06 XB12X that did not come with the RSS, but a factory trim piece that isn't really a scoop. I just did my motor build (NRHS 1250 kit, Stage II headwork, and CAT3 cams for anyone interested) and made the motor clean and pretty, wondering if there would be a huge disadvantage to leaving the piece off, so you can see more of the motor. Eventually I will likely get a right side scoop as part of the comfort kit once the weather warms up more, but the factory piece looks like just a trim piece.

Before, trim piece visible

I can't offer info on the efficacy of that OE mini-scoop, but I wholly agree on wanting to see more of that iconic motor. If I rode in a cooler environment, that piece would definitely come off mine.
FWIW, If you discover you need more airflow, the revised scoop that came on the '10 Ss is moderate size w/o the engine-hiding bulbous-ness of the Uly's later RSS. Inexpensive, too.

FWIW, When I bought my 05 scg, it didn't have either scoop on, the guy said he ran it like that for 5k plus...I promptly put the left side back on but the bike didn't come with the right side scoop in the parts box, I'm almost 2.5k into it now with no engine related issue or overheating.

My understanding is that little scoop is to direct some air between the cylinders to keep the fuel rails cool. You probably can get away without it, but like mentioned above, the small 2010 right side scoop looks nice and may be a better option.

Yes that is the correct number, and it is still available from the dealers for $25 and some change. I just picked mine up yesterday actually.

I finally added the larger OEM 2 piece right side scoop M0851.7AA & M0852.7AA last year and it really does limit the time the fan comes on here in Florida. Wish I had done it sooner.

For now I got the small scoop on the way, got it for $20 shipped from a friend. Didn't want to pay the scratch right now for the big one. I still might get it later though.
