Swapping the shock, forks, and kickstand from a 2006/7 XB12Ss Lightning Long will lower the bike safely.

A custom seat would be cheaper and easier way to shave a little seat height.

how much would the shock and forks lower it? i don't know if the seat would be as comfortable after being cut down

It will drop it about 1.25" over a stock XT.

I used to run that suspension on one of my bikes, here is what it looked like:

There are a bunch of seat options in the aftermarket, you won't give up comfort by going to a thinner seat if it is built right. The 1190RX for example looks like it has a roofing shingle for a seat, but is very comfortable.

Could you post a picture of your bike?

Another cheap option, something I'm doing, is I got some 1" handlebar risers from Al at American Sport Bike, so that I can have an extra inch to push the forks further up in the trees. This will drop the front end ~7/8" in my case for $45, though my forks are already pushed up in the tubes about an inch. If your forks are flush with the trees, you have more room for lowering the front. As fir the rear, well I haven't gotten that far yet. Keep in mind this will affect rake and trail a bit.

If you do a suspension swap, I'd be very interested in buying your XT suspension parts for my X.

i don't want to lower the front without doing the rear at the same time. just gotta find a guy who wants x suspension for his ss and we could all just swap.

Darwin- here's what we need to do:

Bruce gets my X suspension, you get Bruce's SS suspension, and I get your XT suspension. Win-win-win.

If we timed it right, we probably wouldn't even lose a weekend of riding.
