I've noticed some cracks and checking in the potting material on the back side of my XB12S voltage regulator. Is this a reason to replace it, or just a cosmetic thing?
Thanks.

Just get one of those voltmeters from kuryakin and guess no more!
My uly had visual defects in the potting compound but they weren't corresponding to any major heat-generating components in there.

My regulator got weak but didn't fail outright. I dug into the potting to see if there was anything I could see but found nothing.

I dug that whole little board out and there was no smoking carnage to see!
I signed up for a show dammit!

LOL.

Honestly I wouldn't worry about it. Like Nate says, get a voltage monitor, it can save your bacon and give you an early warning that something is wrong.

The stator and voltage regulator will eventually wear out and fail like everything else in life, a monitor can be the difference between knowing to turn around and go home, or being stuck in BFE with no cell signal.

I've been using the Kuryakyn voltmeter long enough now to have aborted three rides. Got home twice. Once I only got to a bar where the owner offered to hook me up on a charger that got me home after taking time for a leisurely lunch. I'll never have a bike without some sort of voltmeter again.
