ok ive got a 2002 XB9R with a front disk that appears to be warped as when i break there is a pulse type vibration coming through the handlebars. i bought the bike through a dealer so its not covered by the factory warranty but is covered by a 3 month dealer warranty. Ive read up a little on this subject through previous posts but am worried the dealer is going to bodge up the disk by 'machining it'. Ive suggested the problem can arrise from a bent wheel or too much run out on the wheel bearing but the service tech said i was wrong.

am i right in what ive said? will machining be ok to fix the disk if i also find the cause of why this disk warped in the first place?

does anyone have the tolerance limits for the wheel and the disk?

This is just pure speculation on my part, take it with a grain of salt.

The rotor floats, so minor runout on the rim would not necessarily cause pulsing. That being said, the "float" can't be much, so "minor" can't be much, and I can't concieve of how non minor runout on the rim could NOT cause the brake to pulse.

It would be easy to check, go to the Aussie equivelent of Harbor Freight (cheap tools, good selection) and get a runout guage. Check the rotor, then check the wheel. See if both are bent, or just the rotor.

The dealer likely has the runout guage, and it would seem reasonable if you respectfully asked they should be happy to use that guage to show you the wheel is straight but the rotor is bent (if that is indeed the case).

Different things can cause pulsing also. If the runout is excessive, you will notice lots of lever travel to engage the brakes.

Dudes... Your problem is a common one and the rotor is possibly/likely not the culprit to your brake pulsation... It is likely the steering stem cap nut that has loosened... it needs to be tourqed to the correct spec... they tend to loosen up over time.... check this thread ( capnut )

You can also make a cheap runout guage with some wood and a nail. Put your bike on a stand and (after you have built a little stand for the guage) put the nail slowly up to the wheel, disc, whatever. It will do the same thing just to tell you if you have something untrue. Not precise and don't touch your wheel with it!
