Hey guys, I'm new to the site but a just bought a 2008 buell XB12R firebolt and am having some problems. The guy I bought it from had said that it had some older gas in it and he had put some stable in it and after 2 tanks or so it should be all good. Well ive put about 9 tanks through it and this is my problem. The bike idles at 1100 RPMs then will drop and raise back up. Occasionally it will even die while idling. It also makes a popping noise coming from the airbox which I believe is a misfire at low RPMs only while taking off. I really need to fix this problem. It is driving me insane. This is what i have done -Changed spark plugs and have correctly gapped them. -Cleaned throttle body and checked air filter. -Ran some SeaFoam through 2 tanks -Checked battery with load tester. a little weak so I charged it and it still had the problems. -Reset the TPS a few way. One I turned the bike one and did this -throttle open for 1 sec -closed 1 sec -repeat 2 more times -turn off then on and wait for engine light to go off and start bike. - the whole time the kill switch was on run. I tried this other method where you turn the key on -kill switch to NOT RUN -Full throttle and turn kill switch to run -close for a sec -then the same as the other reset way. |

Our 2008 and up bikes use a servo controlled air bypass for idle control. Sometimes they get sticky but can be cleaned. |

Yep your Idle Air Control valve is probably gunked up, follow these instructions to clean it: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/142 838/634269.html (Message edited by Froggy on May 31, 2013) |

My 2008 Bolt does this also, but only after it has been ridden, shut off, then restarted after about 5-40 minutes of rest. When fully warmed up again, the idle goes back to normal. When it is cold the idle is fine. It has been this way for two years. I've been meaning to clean it out, but haven't gotten to it yet. Good luck |

09 xb12r 31k miles also having this issue. once engine is hot an down shift to idle it will fluctuate down to 500 then up to 2000 a few times. Some times it will correct after a few times. It doesnt do it all the time though. checked Idle air control, plugs , wires, intake for leaks, o2 sensor, coil, reset TPS, and fuel pressure is good. Not throwing codes. Even swapped ECM out. still doing this. About to set it on fire an get ins $. |

It sounds like a vacuum leak/lean condition. |

Having the same issue with my 09 Uly, seems to be heat related, much worse on a hot day. I've replaced the spark plugs, ecm, O2 sensor, TPS, idle air control valve and IAT sensor. The bike ran damn near perfect for the first 14,000 miles. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. |

Last night I was talking to a guy who has an 09 Uly, asked him if it had any issues. He said it had idling problems and it turned out to be a wire going to the idle air control valve had rubbed against the rear head causing a hole in the insulation. Worth looking into. |

Sounds like an intake leak. |

yeah, idle issues plus overheating are the hallmarks of an intake leak causing a lean condition. |
