If the XB will be in storage for 4-5 months how does the oil change interval translate for that situation? Do you:

A) Ride all season, change the oil, store the bike for 5 months. Then ride on that oil for the following season.

B) Ride all season, change the oil, store the bike for 5 months, change the oil again when it comes out of storage.

C) Ride all season, store the bike, change the oil when it comes out of storage.

D) Doesn't matter, as long as you change it at least once a year.

If it's going to be sitting I would just do an oil change w/filter. The reason you wouldn't want it sitting with the old oil is the combustion byproducts (acidic and other contaminants) that the oil contains from normal use.

In your case I would do A. The oil you changed before storage is fresh and will work and do it's job fine at the start of the next season.

Unless you put more than 5,000 miles on it during the summer (I think the interval is 5,000) - then you'd want to change the oil mid-season too.

Don't forget a battery tender.

Myself, I also keep my bikes parked on sheets of plywood to protect the tires from lye that leaches out of cement...

I always change the oil and filter before putting the bike away for 4 months. I also stick a bit of fuel preserver in the tank, and gas it right up. And similar to Midknyte, wheel it onto a couple of sheets of thick cardboard to keep the tires out of contact with concrete. Battery is in the house on a tender. Done this process for the past 5 years, and knock on wood, the 12R is always sweet as a nut when I'm ready to ride in Spring! Just put it to bed last weekend, and already missing it!

I never put my bikes away, but if I did I'd change the oil before for sure. I do not see a need to change after storage for just one winter. Oil will be fine and condensation will be minimal I think.

I change my engine oil every ~2k miles and tranny oil every ~4k miles.
