Is it really necessary to have to get a new gasket for the cover every time I check the oil? I have not checked it, and just going that the previous owner changed the oil right before a ride to Maine and back from NC.. I have put maybe 350 mile sonit since owning it, and would like to check it myself, but will have to hold off if I need to get a gasket before checking it? Thanks!

As long as you're careful, it should be reusable.

That said, isn't it the same gasket that a lot of Sportsters use? Shouldn't be too hard to find one locally...

That may be the case, I have a harley shop 3 miles from my office here.. I was just curious. Just seemed like a bit of a hassel to simply check oil. Whatever happened to the sight glass like the old bikes used to have.. Man I miss those days.. Now its gaskets, or pulling inspection bolts. Sometimes technology isn't a plus..

I don't know what technology has to do with it?

I have never replaced the cover gasket on any of my Buells, and I would bet that I have changed the primary oil 20+ times. Just be careful with it.

Also, you only need to pull the cover when checking the primary oil- you know that right? You really don't ever need to check it, just change it once/year. The engine oil has a dipstick.

Thanks Andy, yea I know that, however not being familiar with the bike and going on what someone said they did doesnt give me 100% confidence, even though the guy seems like a great upstanding guy.. Just like the confoidence of knowing that it is well.

I understand. First thing I do with a new bike is complete fluid swap and all necessary adjustments and tune up....regardless of what the previous owner says about maintenance!

Just be cautious with the gasket, you'll be fine.

Not on the XB models. Looks like he's got a Uly. The manual calls for a new gasket, so I bought one for my first oil change. 50,000 miles later I still have it hanging in the basement for when the original one starts leaking.

Yeah - I changed oil each month during race season. Can't remember when I last paid for a gasket.

Half the manual instructions are written by lawyers.
