Hey guys,

This is as much an introduction as an opening question to a thread. I've been looking since spring, but no one seems to have the answer online yet.

I've got an '07 XB9SX, and love it immensely. Wouldn't trade it for any other bike. Currently serving in the US Navy, and about to be sent overseas for a 3 year tour.

Before that, however, I've got a 1500 mi round trip to do for Thanksgiving, part of which will be thru the Appalachian Mtns back to TN. Needless to say, it will be a bit chilly, and I'd love to install my factory heated grips. Only thing holding me back for months has been fabricating the accessory wiring. I've got the connector and terminals on order from my dealer, but I've no schematics for the harness.

I'm prepared to hardwire the new plug straight off the battery with an in-line 3amp fuse, but worry about being an idiot and forgetting to turn the grips off or them shorting out in the rain someday and killing my battery. Does anyone have the schematics from the 08 and later Buells so I can match up the wiring?

An easy way to do it would be to just use a meter to find the switched 12v coming out of the ignition switch and use that to energize a relay for the heated grips.

It should be a red/black or red/gray wire.

There is a 3rd power line going into the headlamp to power the position lamp, you can safely use that, and it is switched so you will not kill your battery if you forget to turn the grips off.

Muahahaha! Local Buell Dealership got the schematic out for me so I could copy the setup.

You will need:

Connector Grey 2pin - Y0226.1AK $0.85
Terminal Socket x2 - 73190-96 $0.99ea
Relay SPDT, Micro - 31522-00C $5.99
Fuse 10amp Mini - 72462-00 $1.99ea
Terminal fuse x2 - Y0091.02A8 $$1.35
Terminal relay x5 - Y0092.02A8 $1.35

Schematic:

Wire: - Destination:
Grey (Ignition Power) - Fuse Block 20 - Relay Pole 1
Black (Ground) - Fuse Block 12 - Relay Pole 2
New Wire (Fuse Power) - Fuse Block 16 - Relay Pole 3 - Fuse 10amp
New Wire (Power to Accessory) - Fuse Block 17 - Relay Pole 5

There should be both and open relay and fuse slot on pre-08 bikes. This will allow you to wire up the accessory wiring yourself.

Got my stuff on and ready. Copied the setup from the 08's so now it only works with the ignition on. Only thing I would warn against is the drill bit that comes with the kit is garbage. Would have been faster to bite the hole in the handle bar. Use a good titanium bit with WD-40 for a like butter experience. Also, take some time to mock up the left grip first and mark the position with a wax/grease pencil to ensure the grip meets flush with the left controls after drilling and installing self tapping screws. Mine's not too far off, but has a 1/16th ish gap that only the most anal will notice because I simply set the set screw of the adapter into the LH controls reference hole. The instructions aren't very clear on where exactly to put the guide, other than to line up the set screw with the LH control guide.

Also, the relay terminals aren't entirely correct. They are correct for the larger two relay poles, but not the smaller 3. Don't have a part number on hand for them, and I ended up modding my fuse block to accept just soldering the wires directly to the relay for now.
