My problem is I have blown the engine in my 03 XB9R and I have been given an astronomical amount from Harley to fix it because they claim Harley no longer has those engines available so they will have to order the internals piece by piece to rebuild it. My question is can the bike be fitted with an XB12 engine and if so what would it take other than an ecm and muffler swap? Also wouldn't Harley be still producing XB12 engines since they are required to make parts available 7 years post production? Would it be cheaper to buy an XB12R? | ||

What specifically is wrong with your motor? The XB9 motor should still be available, I don't see why it wouldn't be. The 12 motor is doable, and it is a bit more than just the ECM and pipe (although it is possible to reuse your old ones), you will need a new wiring harness at a minimum due to different fuel injection systems, but phsyically it mounts the same as the only difference between the two are the internals like pistons. Given the cost of major engine work, it often is more economical to get another vehicle than the repair the motor, this is true with cars too. You can get a lightly used XB or 1125 for around what you will be paying the dealer in the end. | ||

They are talking 3 grand and they are saying the bearing is bad and the bike will need new flywheels as a result. According to this guy Harley no longer has access to the XB9 engine which I also found strange. I will have to confirm what he said was wrong with the motor but I remember him saying something about the bearing being bad and me needing a new motor. | ||

IF you are comfortable with doing your own wrenching, you can tear the motor down, ship the case halves to Dark Horse Crankworks along with new flywheels (or ebay flywheels). Ebay part-outs are most often due to crashes and often the internals are good on low-mileage machines (I've got a set of ebay flywheels and cases in at Darkhorse being worked right now) http://www.darkhorsecrankworks.com/ You might ask John Dahmer at Darkhorse if he has a line on flywheels somewhere. I THINK the new flywheels are going to be almost $800 if I recall through a dealer (and they are still in stock) By the way, splitting the cases, rebuilding the bottom end and the rest of the motor for $3K sounds about right. | ||

16032-02 is the pn shown in the '03 9R parts manual. Revisions 04 (and 05, world versions) are still showing as available at chicagoharley for $3296.29. You'd have to figure out what the revisions were. My guess would be the larger drive so you'd have to add on the cost of new belt, rear pulley and covers. Slaughter's advice will save you tons of money and give you a new career or tons of bragging rights. It's not that difficult an engine to work on. Tool cost can build up but weigh that against the shop estimate. And they're "shinies", they don't count in a budget. (Message edited by iamarchangel on July 29, 2011) | ||

If you're not in a hurry I would try to rebuild the engine yourself. What do you have to lose? |
