I'm unlowering my SL and need to replace the short original side stand.

I've read all the relevant factory stand recall bulletins and many Badweb posts, but it is still unclear if the weak stands were just limited to a few bikes or if all '03 XB stands were weak. I want to make sure and swap out my short stand with a standard one that won't break.

Based on the bulletins, PN 94129Y will work and those are easily id'd by the R stamp. But I may be buying used, and you know how that goes...

So my question is: Is there a way to be certain I don't get one of the weak stand legs?

Are the recalled side stands visually different from non-recalled ones? There's some photos in one of the bulletins that may show a visual difference, but the photos are lousy.

Thanks for any info that helps clear this up for me.

Thanks BIB, however, you may be thinking of the later '05 recall. The '03 service bulletins specifically called for replacing the stand leg, not the bolt.

It all depends on the bolt!
if it breaks then the hinge bends or the thread damaged(depends where it breaks)in that case you have to replace the whole sidestand!
So they replaced the whole sidestand for the security (i think)

So you only have to update the bolt!

Thanks again BIB, however, again, you may be thinking of the later '05 recall. The '03 service bulletins specifically called for replacing the old stand leg with a new stronger leg (new PN), not with a new bolt.

I guess I don't understand the question...

if you are buying a newer stand you need to look at the bolt

if you are buying an older stand you need to look for an R

ask for a picture of some other confirmation if necessary.... ?

I recently raised my Sl via a suspension trade, we communicated a few times on the phone (was there a recall on the newer bolts? if so I bet he did it) and sent each other photos of parts before mailing stuff out. he has a 2007 firebolt (I think that's the year, its much newer than mine anyway, and 43mm)

Just found this helpful thread: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/327 77/281458.html#POST903644

Looks like the cure is PN L1167.02A8 which is a 2007 stand leg. And whatever frikkin bolt is needed to hold it. : )
