Pretty sure OSHA says oil on your hands is BAD, gloves are pretty much required and most mechanics have decided it is nice not to have to wash for 15 minutes after one job just to go and grab the next customer's car for the next job.

Get this... OSHA says they must wear hard hats while working under a car too, and a few other stupid things that you will probably never see them doing. Both my brothers were laughing about this from new guidelines given to them from their employers.

Link?

I have been elbow deep in EDM oil, CNC coolant and hydraulic fluid from plastic injection machines while in full view of OSHA with not even a blink of an eye from them...

That is what porters are for...

I use an open end on the front, and a 1/4" fuel line for the rear.

Is oil a carcinogen?

When I saw the hat I thought of caddy shack and Rodney Dangerfield,"Oh, but it looks good on you".

It's no laughing matter either, when they lay their scalp open on some hard, pointy or sharp bits under the car. It happens, especially if your over 5' tall.

I've been to Honda auto factories in Ohio and you will get written up if caught under a car without a hard hat...

Can't find an OSHA link about motor oil, but everything I did find in MSDS sheets said occasional skin contact is not that bad, but daily contact should be avoided. Keep in mind that even Mercedes mechanics get oil covered every day so protection is smart (if not required). Could be more shop policy than OSHA requirement, but they all wear gloves when doing anything really dirty.

Must be nice to have people to fetch your next job, not very many places that do this for the mechanics in this part of the country. Service writer grabs the car from the customer, drives it out back and parks it, mechanic goes and grabs it when their bay is open and the customer expects the car to be returned as clean or more clean than when dropped off (both brothers work for Mercedes).

Now if you are constantly covered in way oil, you might want to be worried. Aren't most of the coolants now water based and non-toxic? I know Mobil Vactra was redesigned so that it was easier to separate from the coolant and so that it might stick to the ways better when flooded with coolant. I would also be concerned about any hydraulic oil that is not vegetable based, pretty much all these motor oils and alcohols are a carcinogen in enough quantities. Breathing the mist would be even worse!

At any rate, it never hurts to protect yourself from chemicals. My dad has lost both of his kidneys as well as deteriorated his transplanted kidney due to a disease he got from using chemicals in the 70's and 80's with no protection. He worked for the railroad and they used to scrape labels off the barrels and tell the guys they could wash parts in there safely.

I want to know why you are rotating the engine to change plugs. Never had a problem getting them done without rotating. Remove left side scoop and airbox, wrench on front,5/8 socket on swivel for rear, put it back in with fuel line to start.
