Ok, not new here or to Buells, you guys know that(look at my profile), But I am still sure I don't know everything.

Gotta performance question that has me pulling what hair I have left out.

My 2004 12s has 1600 miles, a Buell race exhaust, stock air filter, and non-race ecm.

My quandary? The damn thing does not want to return to idle quickly when at operating temp. All seals and gaskets are tight, TPS reset has been done, TWICE. The bike runs great and pulls like a freight train. BUT, when I close the throttle she hangs like a monkey on a high wire. My 9 has the above said with the difference being the race ecm, when I throttle the 9 down she drops like a rock.

I have EcmSPY and understand the concepts the developers have provided.

My question, is this normal for a stock 2004 ecm?. Is there something I'm missing? Or do I need to support Erik and the elves by purchasing a race ecm from Erik Buell Racing?

Is this in neutral?? or do you only see the problem while riding?

Seems the engine should respond to the map?
Maybe the throttle positioning sensor voltage is not dropping as fast as you would like?

If you have a cable and can look at your fuel maps there is a way to help this by dropping fuel in certain cells. I can explain more if your interested.

when I close the throttle she hangs like a monkey on a high wire at 2000rpm?
If so, the idle needs just a tweak.
The adjust is by the intake scoop.

What Glitch said. Your idle is to high. Gotta drop it a bit. Idle should be between 1050-1150 when the bike is warmed up.

I'm with Glitch- that's how an XB with the idle set just a tick high would act. If your maps are stock, I wouldn't touch them...that's not normal behavior. Correct the problem first.

Lately its been hard to convince people that its as simple as the idle being too set too high.

While it is comparing apples and oranges, to some extent.....

Got a new to me X-1, and I noticed the idle hanging while riding on the street. Given the bikes age, I suspected a beginning leak in an intake seal, a known maintenance item on tubers. On a whim, I tweaked the idle setting a bit lower, and the hanging went away. Hope this helps, Dave

Idle is to high you have to lower it manually there is a torques screw by the scoop very little bit of movement will do it

More info. I did set the idle at 1050 when warm after resetting the TPS per the EcmSPY manual. She will idle back down to 1050 but it takes forever to get there. First thing I checked was the intake seal and it's not leaking, or at least I think it's not.
I did notice something strange though. Before the reset it didn't do it but the idle was at 950, seems kind of low for a 12 to idle at 950.

Now on the fuel map in EcmSPY I did notice that at 100% the rear cell was at 170 while the front was at 160. This actually seems normal to have the rear a bit richer.

I'm going to drop the idle a touch and see if that helps.
I really appreciate your help, I know it's probably something small that I missed.

this is usually the cause of a lean condition and could be solved by enriching the mixture.

Or it could be an intake leak , spray wd40 or starting fluid around intake and injectors stacks and see it the idle increasing if so its an intake leak some where

Throttle cables may be hanging up. I would take them off and check if they slide back and forth inside the sleeves easily or not.

Race exhaust plus stock ECM almost certainly points to a lean condition. What is you AFV? If it is relatively high then your idle mixture may be way out of whack. Check for leaks and do some datalogging and then make changes to the fuel cells to fix the problem spots.

I would match the buell race exhaust with a intake mod. I have a voodoo exhaust and the whole intake mod with a high flow filter anit runs great i believe it because ive created a balanced vacume. If im wrong why does mine work great??

I have had the same idle down issue, If I set the base idle @ 1050rpm when hot, it won't return to idle quickly when revved. If the base idle is set for 950rpm when hot, everything works great. I keep mine set at 950RPM and call it a day.

My 06 SS pulls the same crap if my idle is set any higher than 950. I went nuts trying to figure it out and on a whim turned the idle down and voilą it worked like a charm.

I set mine to 750, it makes it easier to blend in during poker runs.

Fixed!

Checked everything that could leak and found nothing.

Warmed her up, set the idle at 950 and viola!

Runs like butter.

Thanks guys.
