for those who have participated in this ritual, i'm embarking on it for the first time. I posted my 'tranny woes' thread a while back when i lost 3rd-5th gear, and BRASS shavings were found in the primary. I have since been slowly making progress removing and dismantling the engine in my garage. According to the manual, once the 14 bolts are removed from the left case, the cases just 'come apart'. My question is how much force do i need to break the seal between the cases? Seems like they don't wanna come apart too easily, and being the first time attempting i don't wanna make any big mistakes.. Any insight is appreciated,

thanks,
James

p.s.
while i'd definitely prefer to be out riding, there is a certain 'good' feeling about attempting to tackle this type of project, at least so far!

Good question, I have a set of cases here as well that are all stripped down and waiting to come apart, I think its just the glue/sealer between the cases that is holding mine now, I`m sure others will chime in and say whats all to it ...!

if you have an old stove you can remove all the bolts, degrease cases with water soluable cleaner and then dry out and put in oven for 1/2 hr at 450 degrees, use weldings gloves and put apart by hand.

The heat causes everything to expand and fall right out

Hmmm Maybe just applying Heat then around the case seams will do the same trick?

For a similar motor, I have set it on a box with a hole for the crankshaft and tapped it with a plastic mallet at the joint and pulled on whatever I could and it came apart. You could run bolts in some tapped hole as a handle and use the crank weight to pull down while lifting.

I cracked it like an egg (lot literally banging it on the ground) it needs to be split a bit before the rest can be easily opened
you know the swingarm mounting points? I put a $20 floor jack inbetween those and cracked the seal a notch, the rest was split easy by hand by working your way around the perimeter
