Ok, was riding today as today was a nice day. As I was on the road going at about 70 mph I had what felt like a split second loss of power. I continued on and all of a sudden the bike began to bog down. It would come back and then do it again. I pulled to the side of the road and checked out everything. I didn't have a check engine light or anything. I restarted the bike and it would idle ok for a second and then it would begin to bog the idle down. The idle would sit around 600 rpm unless I twisted the throttle in which it would come back to 1150 rpm.

I decided to limp home so I road it back. It was fine until I got into the city and was sitting at a traffic light. There is started to bog the idle down and when I got moving it was lacking power and the engine sound was different until I let off the throttle and back on. When I got the garage the idle was again bogging to 600 rpm.

I pulled the codes and it would appear I still had the historical from back when I was doing engine work. The ones that do make some sense are the front and rear injectors, TPS and fuel pump.

Anyways, I was wondering if anyone has had something happen like this before. All help is appreciated.

You were probably running on 1 cylinder. Either fouled plug, or one of your plug wires rubbed through grounding out on the motor.

Neg, plug wires are good and very unlikely I fouled the plugs as I am very particular about my start up. Also, new plugs.

I've been doing some reading. Something that has come up is the fuel filter being clogged. I do have 50,000+ miles on this bike with the original pump. Chances?

Tomorrow I will run a fuel pressure test and see what that shows.

It sounds sorry to say like a fuel pressure problem there have been a few bad pumps. Doable but a bear if I remember correctly on the posts.

I had the same thing happen and found loose battery ground.

What about the "skip spark mode" thing when temp is high?

NO LIGHT BUT....?

Skip spark will have the check engine light begin to flash.

As for the pump. Yeah, getting the feeling as well, but can't say until I check the fuel pressure. Will check the grounds though to be sure.

Are you running the race ecm and exhaust?

Sounds like the problem I'm having with my 06 lightning long. I've been in and out of the shop with a sputter, backfire, shutdown cycle after running for a few miles for the past couple of years.
No lights.

Harley & customer care can't figure out the problem.
So far we've
1. Replaced the ecm (twice)
2. Replaced the throttle position sensor
3. Replaced the fuel pump.
4. Checked every wire and connection on the bike.

Harley has checked everything in the book and still no progress. My bike has been in the shop for the past four months straight because at every turn the diagnosed parts we need are anywhere but at the shop my bike is at.

They're trying to replace the race ecm again to see if that and the other parts were the culprit.

I am running the Race ECM with Drummer exhaust and K&N filter. I've been running this config for the last 5+ years now with no issues. So I'm just going to go with the fuel pump is losing pressure. Will know more tomorrow when I test the pressure from the pump.

Oh, just in case. Anyone got the part number for the fuel filter on the pumps? I'm leaning towards that being it.

If you are going to pull the pump, might as well stick a new filter on there.

Test pressure first. Get an idea of what I'm looking at before pulling anything.

I often times feel a stutter when it switches from closed to open loop for the fuel injection control system. Any chance it's that??

Sounds like TPS or O2 sensor. Have you done any data logging?

Ok, just checked fuel pressure. It's within spec. The bike started to bog at idle when it got warm and the pressure never changed.

So, I tested some more and disconnected the O2 sensor and sure enough the idle went back to normal. Reconnect and it bogs down again. So, it appears to be something with that. I'm going to make an ECM Spy cable and get some real time data to go farther with this.

Temp sensor also has had a hand the cause of such problems.

Yup, won't know more until I get the cable for ECMSpy.

Update, ok, got my cable and checked the bike real time. Got a code during my test that was O2 constantly reads lean. Being the O2 was behaving normally before this I figured intake leak.

I got what I had (throttle body cleaner) and sprayed the intake. Sure enough, the bike bogged down for a second (it was in Open Loop then due to the computer throwing that code.) (This stuff is safe for the engine and O2 sensors, the cleaner and I tested it to see what the engine would do when it got sprayed in the intake. It bogs down) Anyways, I tested this a few time to get a repeat of the results. It did the same each time I sprayed the intake gaskets. So, I'm think those suckers need to be reinforced. Anyone can recommend me some gasket sealant for those or what they did to fix they leaks?

what is the AFV after riding?
you may want to reset the tps and afv. get it running and take it out to see if it still is doing it. after riding check the afv relearns in closed loop.the afv needs to be between 95 and 105 IMO.

If this is all clear. check the oil system and heat for spark skip as already mentioned.

Or it could be a false reading from the Head temp sensor and/or wire. I had one rub through and falsely read doing the same issue once. It took forever to figure it out. I fixed it by re-wrapping the wire with heat tape. Once back together all Issues were gone.

last is the other test at full temp check the intake seals. I use map gas. on throttle up. if leaking get new seals and use some sort of Hylomar sealer on the seals.

Other than that quickly I would have to be at the bike to help find it.

I've had that happen plenty of times. I get really bad vapor lock whenever i ride and its warm. That fuel just gets way to hot and doesn't wanna go anywhere till it cools down. i don't know the weather where you live, but here in Hotlanta it can get really hot and my bike will start vapor locking around 85 about what its been the last few days. So if im out for a while i have to stop and give the bike around 15 min to cool down a little bit.

Grumble.... Ok, so the sealant didn't work. Guess I'll get getting some James Gaskets for those seals and we'll see if those work any better. Question for those that used them. Are they thicker than the stock gaskets or what?

Well, tried some ISS gaskets. Didn't work. So, I'm going with the James Gaskets that some other XBers have used and say have worked.

Anyone used these that can speak up and let me know what your impression of them is?
