Practice now before you need to. It is not easy due to the high compression. It won't be practical if you have a dead battery, as you would need to spin the motor enough to generate enough power to fire up the ECM and fuel pump. If you had a bad stater motor it would be more doable.

If I remember right, it was something like 20mph in 4th gear seemed to do the trick.

I push my NineR ALOT! it still has the original battery from when it was a puppy (made in may 02). I'm so good at it I gave my starter relay to jimduncan69 for the weekend, I pushed it off every where we went.

Solo style. (if you can recruit other folks get them to push)

1. Turn key ON, flip kill switch to run. It will really piss u off when you have pushed like 10 times with no luck cuz you dont have the switches on. DAMHIK.

2. Loosen clutch plates. This will make pushing easier. If its cold or has been sitting for while the clutch plates get sticky and make it hard to push. Squeeze clutch then drop it into 1st and push it back and forth as you squeeze and release the clutch.

3. If you are not on a hill, find the least amount of incline/flat area with good traction. Gravel, dirt, grass wet or dry is difficult. You want the rear tire to bit.

4. Put it into 1st, grab both handle bars. squeeze the clutch in. RUN! at least 10 feet. Jump on and let go of the clutch. If that does not work try 2nd gear. I find the 9s like 1st and the 12s like 2nd. This technique takes practice to be able to do it on the 1st try.

With the NineR all I need is about 15ft flat paved runway. It does not take much effort.

With my Uly it takes ALOT more effort. She is a big gurl and it take more for my stumpy body to jump on and clear the hard bags while running hard.

Its much easier down hill on a good surface.

I know its not that complicated, but lots folks don't believe it can be done especially on a 12.

I put a vidja together when it gets warmer. I'm sure I will have to do it to the NineR.

it can definitely be done on a 12. had to do it a year ago or so, use second gear and be sure to hop on rear when you release the clutch and once it starts dont lug it and apply clutch again. practice you'll get the hang of it.

I do this for my dirtbike all the time. Never tried it on the Buell. I do it just like barker said he does

I helped someone push start a tuber last home coming. 2nd gear and that PULLING THE CLUTCH IN after it fires is very important. The getting help is a big +!

I have push started my 03 XB9S MANY times when it had a dead battery. Did it by myself...nothing to it. Put it in 2nd...hold in the clutch...run along side it.... jump on it and release clutch....fires right up every time.

What Barker says and....
Bdefore you start the pushing and running put it in second and pull it backwards until you approach TDC in reverse then [pull in the clutch. This means you achieve max momentum before the piston(s) hit compression again. I always start it in second gear (but maybe I can run faster than Barker lol) Timing is everything, your ass cheek should hit the saddle just as the piston(s) hit compression.
This is a foolproof method honed from years of single cylinder racing and I will give you your money back if it doesn't work even if you're a 100lb weakiling .. I have bump started a fully dressed 1972 Electraglide many times using this method.

btw beware of chestpain during the running and pushing part or you may end up dealing with another form of compression!!

I had to do this myself in my parking garage when I turned the key just a bit too far from lock ; )

It is possible to push start an xb12r, I promise lol . .

i just skid the back tire if i use first, so i like to use second cuz it has more leverage on the motor.
third has plenty, but won't spin the crank fast enough, unless you got a big hill.

so yeah, follow the above steps and have the forethought to park atop a slope if your gonna need to push start your scooter
