Hello all,

I am new to the Buell scene and am very excited about it. I will be picking up my new to me 2003 XB9R in Toronto this afternoon and can't wait. Unfortunately the weather here is crappy and I may not even get a chance to ride it until spring. The bike itself has only 387kms on it and was was owned by somewhat of a collector. It is already outfitted with the race kit so I am pleased about that. Anyway, I do have some questions after searching and reading what I could in the archives. Here we go, and I hope I am not too much of a pain.

Oil,
I read that Mobile 1 15W50 synthetic is the preferred engine oil and can be had at Wal-Mart. I am assuming this is just the standard synthetic from Mobile 1 and is not a motorcycle specific oil.

Belt,
I most likely have the first version of the rear drive belt but will not know for sure until I pick the bike up today. If it is the older version I would like to change it to the upgraded version. I believe G0500.02A8R is the new updated version but can these be purchased directly from Gates? Does anyone have a manufacturers part number for the belt?

Idler,
If I am going to change the belt I should also probably change the idler as well. However I can not find a part number for a new or replacement idler. Does anyone know that number? Or do people just replace the bearing an continue using the same idler? The other question I have then is what is the bearing part number for the idler. I believe there are 2 bearing possibilities depending on what version of the idler I have. Newer ones I believe are 2 single row bearings (6203) and the older version uses 1 double row bearing. Is the double row a 5203 bearing.

Sorry for all the questions but these were things I could not find while searching through the archives. Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated.

Joe

Welcome aboard! I wish I could help you with part numbers, but there are more credible people to help with that. Froggy (as much as he may not want his name thrown around) seems to have a list of these part numbers and maybe a few others.

As far as the oil goes...man, you are hitting a touchy subject. I have used car oil in other bikes, but since the Buell is different to me in many aspects, I don't run the risk and run the synthetic Harley Davidson 20W 50. That may be changing as I am not a big fan of Harley these days and may go with Amsoil. Generally, if it is approved for motorcycles, and depending on the temperature (which weight to use in winter or summer) lubrication is just that. Lubrication.

As far as the belt goes, 387Km does not sound like much and if the belt doesn't show any rot, I wouldn't worry about it right away. Enjoy riding it for a while and getting used to it. As for the tensioner, I say the same. Try to get a llittle bearing grease around the edge and if it doesn't grind or lock, enjoy the ride! SOrry I couldn't be of more help, but you shouldn't worry about parts if the bike was in climate controlled conditions and hardly ridden. Hell, it doesn't even sound like it made it past the break in! Good find!

Hi and welcome to the madness!

I agree with the above sentiments...don't fix what aint broke!

I have over 17,000 miles on the ORIGINAL (not the replacement upgrade) '03 belt and no issues. Read up on it- they were not necessarily bad belts, but if twisted or wound up too tightly then they were weakened. It is likely that you belt has never been off your bike, so personally, I wouldn't worry about it.
YMMV.

As far as oil, I'll only mention my first-hand personal experience.... I ran Mobil 1 15w50, followed by Amsoil 20w50. Both full synthetic. The Amsoil runs significantly quieter. I'll never switch back.
Valvoline now makes a full synthetic 20w50 as well that might be worth considering.
