If I were to buy a new XB12scg, what would be the proper break-in for the bike? The reason I ask is the closest Buell dealer is about 130 miles away and would like to know if 130 highway miles would be ok or I should pick it up in my truck and do break-in close to home.

IMHO- break it in as hard as possible within the guidelines of break-in procedure in the owner's manual. Download the manual ahead of time from buell.com and read it so you know what it says. 130 highway miles is no problem as long as you don't hold it at a steady 70 MPH the whole way home. Vary speed, RPM, gear, and accelerate, decelerate, and stop a couple of times, etc. I'd also change the oil & filter as soon as I got home.

Right from the 09 owners manual

Break-in Riding Rules

The First 500 Miles (800 Kilometers)

The sound design, quality materials, and workmanship that are built into your new Buell motorcycle will give you optimum performance right from the start.

To allow your engine to wear in its critical parts, we recommend that you observe the riding rules provided below for the first 500 miles 800 kilometers . Adhering to these suggestions will help to assure good future durability and performance.

During the first 50 miles 80 kilometers of riding, keep the engine speed below 4000 RPM in any gear. Do not lug the engine by running or accelerating at very low RPM, or by running at high RPM longer than needed for shifting or passing.

Up to 500 miles 800 kilometers , vary the engine speed and avoid operating at any steady engine speed for long periods. Engine speed up to 5000 RPM in any gear is permissible.

Drive slowly and avoid fast starts at wide open throttle until the engine has warmed up.

Avoid lugging the engine by not running the engine at very low speeds in higher gears.

Avoid hard braking. New brakes need to be broken-in by moderate use for the first 200 miles 300 kilometers .

Drive slowly and avoid fast starts at wide open throttle until the engine has warmed up.I don't have the nutz to do that now! I guess I ride like a wussy.

Give it 30sec to 1min warmup. Don't lug it or cruise it and ride it normally like you would if you had a copper on your arse. Stay off the freeway for the first 100 or so miles so that the engine is cycling reasonably loaded and rings are exhibiting good tension/pressure variance on the bore and not just slapping up and down.
