Does anyone know if the stock cams out of an XB 9 can be used in a 2005 Sportster? They're for my buddy. Thanks

Erik

XB cams rotate backwards from XL cams. Whether you can just stick them in is a good question. The oil pump drive may be different.

"XB cams rotate backwards from XL cams."

No they don't. This is a myth.

"The oil pump drive may be different."

Not if the XB is an 07 or earlier. Same drive gear on the pinion, same oil pump.

Mine is an '07 and the shop manual shows the pinion that engages the gear on the crankshaft on a different cam than on XL's in photos. This would cause the cams to rotate backwards.

No, it engages the number 2 cam in either motor. Pull the cams out of your XB sometime and look at them. There's a "2" stamped on that cam. Do the same with an XL motor and you'll see it stamped with a "2" also. #2 always turns counter clockwise because it's driven off the pinion gear which turns clockwise.

In an XL the cams are put in 1-2-3-4 counting from back to front. In an XB they're put in 1-2-3-4 counting from front to back. But each cam ends up turning the same direction regardless of which motor it's in. The leading and trailing edges of the lobes remains the same.

Most cams have two sets of marks so that they can be put in either motor, too.

Oh yeah credit where it's due, NRHS explained this to me.

Ok, then for an XB, with the engine turning clockwise as viewed from the right side, the #2 cam will rotate CCW and the #3 (rear cylinder inlet) CW.

On an XL, the #2 cam (rear cylinder inlet, called #3 in an XB) will rotate CCW.

I thought it was fair to call that backwards, but irrelevant since the leading and trailing edges of the lobes remains the same as you pointed out.

dont forget the keyway on the xl the cams keyway is located different. so to use them you have to mod the rotor cup to fit it or have the keyway recut to fit the xb.

so there is two ways to do it and the xl cam selection works. the way you do it is your choice.
