I'm tossing the idea that I should take my bike to the dealer.... and Im wondering what I should have them take care of.

My first thing on the list for my 05 12R ~15k,miles is to get the fork oil replaced, along with the recall headlight fix up, and possibly have the oils lines replaced (prolly DIY that one)

not much, thats about it... badweb has shown me that general problems do occur.. is there anything else that I should have the dealer take a look at? electrical? Would they have a computer-plug-in to diagnose the bikes whole electrical system, the 'one cylinder firing' issue is getting to my head???

Are you having issues w/ firing on only 1 cylinder? If not there's probably nothing they can do about checking for it, or any electrical gremlins for that matter.

Only ask them to do things you can't, or wont do. And ask them if there's anything you need/should have done. Ask about costs of anything they suggest, then consider doing it yourself.

Whats wrong w/ the oil lines?

TPS reset maybe, if you dont have the means to DIY.

what is the TPS reset do?

I know that cars a OBDII ports for a computer to read the cars computer, thats how you get trouble codes and such.. without the OBD port for diagnosis, you wouldnt know what to do with the car, but with cars you atleast have a check-engine-light to tell you something is wrong..

but as far as I know, buell doesn't have a check engine light.... So does a dealer have something to plug-in to tell them something is wrong that they cant see visually.
My bike is running fine, but as far as I know, I can be wrong. So do buells have means to communicate to another computer to tell you every-single-possible-system in the bike is working properly?

buell doesn't have a check engine light My does. came on when my blinker wire came loose. Mine is an 08, maybe somebody with a 05 could chime in, but I would think it does.

Yes there is a diagnostic program they can run to check your bike over. I doubt it is cheap though.

Anybody here live near James in Austin TX that has ECMSpy or the other diagnostic kit?? How about checking it out for him?

really, james?
i gotta say, i prolly had the same questions last year, but i never had enuff courage to post them

the TPS is the throttle position sensor. it's the interface between the twist of your wrist and the DDFI. a re-set will help with throttle response issues, and sometimes gas-mileage as a side-effect.

i think it was the 07's that did away with the TPS reset maintenance item, but i'm not 100% sure as to what year.
you should see your check engine light lit when the gauges sweep and all that. it stays on for a couple seconds, and then goes out. if it blinks, or doesn't come on at all, then that is bad.
you can down load an ecm-spy program to any computer, but the connecting cord has to bee pretty short, cuz it's a low-voltage signal (voltage = current x resistance) so laptops are the preference.

i dunno bout you, but i'll DIY every time unless it requires a expensive piece of equipment, for example a tires. and i don't even have a garage!
needless to say i've had some bad experiences with the buell HARLEY dealers

In my experience avoid the dealer if you can. I have yet to find a Buell dealer so far they have been Harley dealers that sell Buells. Get ECMspy and the cable and you will be able to check the codes yourself. You do have a check engine light on your bike as 2008xb12scg stated. I would also recommend bringing your forks to another shop that services foreign bikes. They will be more familiar with inverted forks and less likely to screw something up. .

New plugs couldn't hurt, i'd recommend ngk iridiums.

While on the subject of check engine lights, what does 3 quick flashes repeating mean? There were no codes on the bike.

I recently had bought the double-tipped Buell race spark plugs... and I've talked to the local ricer dealer that was next door to harley, and they said they dont work on buells.. but that is a good point about the forks, maybe they'll say yes for the forks.

ECMspy what are the wonder of it? it sounds like a worthy investment

It better be, all they have to do is plug a few cables in and press buttons!!!
I've had experience with the engine-light during my stator failure, but I seriously doubt that this ONE light can cover the whole bikes health

Don't waste your time having the dealer look at the bike. What are they going to see that ecmspy can't see? Get the forks done and that's all you should need besides the normal plugs, pads, etc.

You can make an ecmspy cable or buy one from xoptiinside.com. He has the info on how to make the cable.

Buell.com has an Owners section where you can view the Owner's manuals for your year model for free if you don't have one. It explains about the Check Engine light. Oh I have a book, but not the right tools for fork oil swap-out.... but maybe I can have an experienced friend help me out with it....
and Im mistaken, it doesn't say to replace the oil lines at 15k, scratch that....

but seriously XBoard, there's not a thing that the dealer should rather do than yourself?

central tx harley should be able to do the fork oil no prob. they have some buell guys there,and they're a sponser of this board. Dont mess with woods for anything buell specific. Honestly, for local questions, you should ask the local buellers. one of them has ecmspy and at one time offered to tune our bikes. At one time or another both buell shops in austin had good buell techs. I do most of my work but my bike has been in both shops at one time or another, no probs

Get the service manual (either buy or PDF, its around the net...). and do it yourself. A six pack and pizza works good for buddies to help. Harley dealers tend to treat us like red headed stepchildren.
