The properly designed larger diameter pipe will provide significantly reduced resistance to flow, thus reducing backpressure. What would you suggest to correct this problem.left view

Also I want to purchase the race ECM and filter.
My main concern is not burning the valves due to low back pressure.
How is it that other harleys get by this?

Either a set of torque cones or a number of aftermarket exhaust companies sell small baffled inserts that would fit into the ends.

Appreciate the info. Hey 2rangerted, it kicks butt!!!!
Above 4k rpms It rockets. period. Yet suffers on the low end because lack of back pressure.
Dynarider do you think it will make a difference if the cone is placed before it 'Y's out?
I have been searching the net and found where one guy uses a butterfly valve (adjustable via wing nut)but his email link doesn't work. So I don't know if that helped his back pressure.
Also can you tell me how will the race ECM help and will it cut down the back fire on deceleration?

One thing I always wanted to try if I built a pipe like that is a flapper like you would see on the stacks of a Semi truck... I would imagine they would make some racket at idle, but it may sound pretty good too.

I think you're confusing back pressure with wave diffusion. You can make big piles of bottom end power with no back pressure at all. Just look at the Force XB pipe.

So how would one diffuse waves on a pipe like that Aaron? If you have the time.

I guess I need to look at the force. If I modify it like that, it would be pretty small megaphones on both sides.

I was gonna add a diversion cone before the yoke.

Sorry, I tried to clean pic up using windows draw, but you get the ideal.

buelster: i built up some stepped straight pipes, using stock sportster headpipes and flanges, and necking up to 2 inch. they sounded realnice, but left a little mid rpm dip, right in my cruise range 3000-3500 rpm. took some inch and 3/4 ex pipe, 6 inch lengths, expanded out the ends, so they fit snug inside the end of my drag pipes, then drilled about 40 5/16 holes in the narrow part of each "baffle", left the drill "snag crap " on the pipe. drill 1/4 inch hole near one end, stuff into end of drag pipes, fasten with 1/4 inch screw. that will get you back all the midrange. also take some of the sharp edge off the exhaust note. you may lose a bit of power way up top, above 6000 rpm, but if you are running on the road, the mid range boost will be worth it.

Fullpower,
Today I installed some baffles (5inches ea.) and it made a world of difference. Low-mid & high has improved tremendously from stock.
Oh MikeJ, there a saying that goes like this. Try hard not to compare yourself to others, for it will make you bitter or vain.

the ones like this are decent, but I cant find a pic right now of the ones for the Khrome werks & Dyno power pipes. They tone the bark down a bit, but really help with the midrange.

buellster
If the collector had a lil more length and maybe some more volume. That mighta helped

but as aaron said...it ain't back pressure..its anti reversion that ya need

Buellster,

I hope this is applicable. I have short, straight pipes on my Bourget (96" S&S). I tried baffles like in Dyna's post. They were a bit too much so I cut them down little by little. Finally ended up with using just bolts through the pipes which seem to provide the backpressure needed without hurting the high end. The performance of this set up vs the baffles vs open pipes was collaborated on a dyno by John Golden (Rolling Thunder Dyno).

Appreciate the information Frank. Does anyone know the part number for the bands that hold the exhaust on the bike?
