I'm going to start buying parts for some mods in the next week or two and would like some input.

'06 XB9SX

Looking to spend about $1000.

First thing to go is the cheesegrater.

Going with an XB Lights setup.

Clip ons or clubmans?

Exhaust?

Grips?

Pegs?

Mirrors?

Any other suggestions?

I will be going through the sponsors here as much as I can.

Exhaust and Race Ecm
or
Exhaust and tune your own Ecm "cheaper"

buy a chopped grader
or
DIY "cheaper

Clipons can be done for 100 to 200 dollars
I've seen clipon on ebay for 60 dollars
housing needs to be spaced out 1"

If you work smart you could do all that for under a 1000 easy...

The Clear Alternatives tail is a lot cheaper than the XBlights setup. Robert does post here a lot and he seems like a nice guy but I couldn't justify the price difference when I put the led taillight on.

I try to be nice

You really have to see both lights in person to get the full effect!

I can tell you first hand the CA light is not very bright, and there are many others who will agree just as well.

Directly behind the CA light is not too bad, but go off angle ANY and it goes to poop.

There is a big price difference, but it is what it is. I wish I could sell them for the price that CA sells there lights for, but I would be loosing too much.

The ONLY LED lights I would suggest would be either XB Lights or the light Al has over at American Sport Bike. But never C.A. or worse those drop in LED "bulbs".

But different strokes for different folks, right?
If you just want to be able to say, hey I have an LED tail light and don't care if its much brighter then stock, go with the C.A.
If you want to actually be seen, go with a better light (which happens to cost more)

Just my 2 cents.....
Keep it safe!
-Robert

P.S.
But after all the testing I have done, PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT buy the clear lens and use the "Red" painted bulb. That has to be the Weakest light I have EVER seen on a buell, well other then a bulb being burnt :-)

Oh, back on direct topic! :-)

If you are buying a chopped tail, I'd just send your piece over to Odie at www.specialops-online.com I think for around $150 he can chop and paint it how you would like it.

With the exhaust, i happen to have one of Odies pipes (Special Ops) and LOVE it!
nothing makes me smile more then when I go out to my bike and see someone looking at it from a distance.....then I start her and they get that crazy puzzled look on there face.....PRICELESS!

But Drummer has a damn nice pipe to.
I'd go with either Special Ops or Drummer
( i like the little man! )

I installed the factory pegs off of an 1125R and like them alot!

I did buy some cheap eBay mirrors that had the signals built in and one of the stalks just broke while riding one day, so I'll be installing bar ends soon.
My buddy has had a Xb12Ss and a CR and refuses to have anything but CRG mirros.
He also LOVES his Pazzo levers.

one day when I get the funds I'll be getting the pazzo or CRG levers!

Hope it helps!

Buy a multi-purpose grinder (like a roto-zip) for $80 and chop the tail yourself....you'll save some cash and have a handy tool too! Do the finish touches with a hand file and use primer, paint, and a clear coat with a little light sanding in between. I just chopped mine last week and it looks just like any other chopped tail!

I wouldn't try to save money on a tail/brake light, it's too important. I don't know much about LED's but I do know that some are a lot brighter than others. Did I mention chain drive ?

"The Clear Alternatives tail is a lot cheaper than the XBlights setup."

My bike came with the CA light- weakest thing I have ever seen. I have the clear lens on it because with a red lens you would hardly be able to even see it- seriously it's that bad. I have seen Robert's (xblights.com) setup in person, and can vouch for their crazy brightness. I plan on that being one of my next mods, the safety factor totally being worth the $$ in my book any day.

As far as the cheese grater- if you have some mechanical ability, then tackle it yourself and save the bucks. If not, then +1 on buying one of Odie's.

I have CRG bar end mirrors and love em. I have tried several different mirror setups, and they are by far the most useful. No matter what way you go, definitely go bar end for the mirrors- having them outside of your elbows is priceless. Also, look for a set that fold in easily (like the CRGs). This is a surprisingly useful feature for when the get bumped.

I have a factory "race kit", but it's not loud enough for my tastes. My vote would be on a Spec Ops pipe, K&N filter and learn ECM Spy and tune away.

I'm in need of some new grips as well. This is totally a preference thing, so YMMV. But don't over look the factory traction grips. I checked em out the other day, and they seemed like quality parts for only $17.

Get a Select Seat- best mod I've got on my bike.

I like the riding position (that's why I bought an S, not an R), so I have no desire to deviate from the factory bars and pegs...so no input there!

Most importantly, do what you like- that's the best part of our bikes...there's a million mods to be done, and everybody's vision is different!

Mrd,
Regarding Robert's XB lights, you can't go wrong. When it's safety you're talking about, these are the way to go. My buddies who ride with me swear that I ride while riding the brakes until I actually hit them. And then they can't believe how they can get any brighter! All this and Robert is top notch. He answered my questions via e-mail before I even ordered from him and will stand by his product 110%.

Other than that, I say a Corbin seat would do, Special Ops pipe, and the Aprilia Tuono style mirrors.

Have fun!

For the record I wasn't trying to knock XBLights, but I am in college and I didn't buy a motorcycle for its safety so Clear Alternatives it is for me.

I graduate in less than a month and have a better job lined up so maybe I can upgrade soon to Robert's set up.

my suggestions:

*special ops pipe and matching tail from odie (xb lights is excellent too)
*re-mapped ecm
*crg levers
*$16 grips from buell are the best i have found
*new suspension setup from a reputable shop

some people go for what makes the bike look cool, some go for what makes it run and ride better. i'm more of the latter but each to their own.

Personally, I think that's a nonsensical statement....why would you even replace the taillight in the first place??? Cheezy, ghetto looks over safety is NEVER a good idea.

+1 on the Pazzo levers (ok, well CRG levers were mentioned...basically same thing!) You will love the feel and adjustability, plus you can get them in colors to match.

Here's the list I would buy if I had $1000 and a stock bike:
K&N filter: $40
Spec Ops pipe: $250
ECM Spy cable: $40
ECM Spy: free
Pazzo levers: $180
XBLights: $225
CRG mirrors: $75
Buell Traction grips: $17
Select Seat: $180
Cheesegrater delete: free
Total: $1007 : )

It seems odd to me that you are spending $1000 and some of it is allotted to a light that we all know sucks. I don't know how much the good one is but you have a G to drop.

Haha, I think you have posts mixed up- the original poster is buying an XB Lights setup...some other guy (who admitted it's inferiority!) bought a CA light..

ahhhh......1st thing should be sliders.
I always overlook those!

But in all honesty EVERY Buell out there should have a set of Dark Horse Motos sliders.

Ive had LSL and compared to Dark Horse Moto....well LSL sucks!

I hope to never ever need the sliders, but If I ever do, I can promise you it will be the BEST $150 I have spent on the bike!

Same goes for frame pucks! BUY THOSE TOO!

Gschuette: No offense taken by me.
I understand completely! Just keep it safe brother! And congrats on graduating!!

Thanks to all the folks who stood up for XB lights! You guys put a smile on my face :-)

But also Mrd.....
Please be warned that once it starts....(the spending that is).... its hard as hell to stop, haha!

Keep it safe guys!

Oh yes, sliders are a must, and get the ones that double as spool in the rear. Frame pucks are anther "duh" in my book.

Oh yeah, and lol at:

+1 Skully

A set of Darkhorse moto sliders is the 1st thing i'd get on a stock 9. Along with Frame pucks.

Special Ops and Drummer are nice pipes.
I run a D&D pipe. Nice but spendy.

Next i would say,
-Race ECM
-K&N Air Filter
-Pazzo Levers
-Buell Touring seat
-XB Lights Tailight

Just my $0.02

Enjoy your new "addiction", Throwing money at your bike. It's fun and it NEVER stops.

$1,000 gas card.

With fuel prices coming down, that's a *lot* of miles and smiles! And somewhere in there, you'll get a feel for what else needs to get done...it's all so personal, it's hard to write a 'recipe' for someone.

I don't really wish that upon you, but that's funny right there!

I'm pretty sure he was aiming it at me, and I wish him no ill will. Quite the opposite actually- I wish he'd buy a good tail light so that cars can see him and he doesn't get killed...or leave the stocker in place.
