does anyone know how effective the ram air intake on the buells is. has any one ever taken a intake air pressure reading? i wonder if these bikes make more power at speed than the dyno numbers indicate. its raining on the iced up roads, so im kinda bored. some one some where, go shred some rubber for me. thanks, dean

I'll be shredding some rubber here in about 40 minutes my friend... Hey... It's 4:20... he he.

On the subject though... It's not "ram air" as such. Most of the ducting is to force air to the rear cylinder.

"MegaSquirt uses an oxygen sensor as feedback for mixture AFR control. MegaSquirt is compatable with single wire (unheated - like Bosch Part Number 12014, used everywhere ) as well as heated units. All parameters that control the feedback (step size and rate, range, trip threshold voltage) are user-controlled. Additionally, since the trip point voltage is user-defined, MegaSquirt is compatable with the DIY-WB (wideband) oxygen sensor board - one simply sets the desired air/fuel ratio trip voltage and you are there. "

This looks interesting... anyone know if the stock injector is compatible??? I suppose it doesn't matter as we can probably get one that suits our purpose and is compatible.

To the ram air question... even if the XB's had true ram air intakes they wouldn't be doing much good under 140 mph. The boost in performance due to ram air can be roughly estimated by the following...

%Boost = V2/8280

Where V2 is the speed in mph.

So at 100 mph the %Boost is 1002/8280=1.2%

At 140 mph the %Boost increases to 1402/8280=2.4%

I was informed by a reliable insider, that the Ram Air system used on this years (semi-factory)race bikes will be available to all in 2004.

That is good and welcome news... But does that ugly contraption really do any good compared to simply drilling the airbox cover full of holes?

Megasquirt should have it's own thread, anyone going big bore on an XB will have an interest in this subject and other's thought's on it.
