I just got back from test riding the XB12S we got in. WOW!
You all need to get to your favorite Buell dealer and demo one of these.
Better get your money down fast, I know I'm not going to be able to keep them in stock.

Hey what's up? I'm new to the board. I've been reading posts while on break at work for some time but can't log in there. I finally registered from home. I imagine working at a dealer you've also ridden a stock XB9S and one with a race kit. How would you compare each to the XB12S? Any news on when they'll have a race kit for the 12's?

The race kit picks up the 9s in the midrange.
The 12 still has a little more.
They already have a race kit for the 12 available.

The bike has a very good feel to it.

The best way I can describe it is, power delivery like a tube frame with the smoothness and refinements of a XB. Its just great!!

Glad to hear first rides are happening. Anyone spend enough time in the saddle to notice if the 12 puts off more heat than the 9s? (Current owner XB9S-L)

Had a great ride on the new XB12S. I was fortunate enough to ride in on Katie's XB9S and could feel a noticeable increase in power in the new bike. Can't wait to ride it again when you have a few more miles on it and maybe a race kit.

The 12s have an interactive exhaust valve inside the muffler that opens and closes based on RPM to help optimize power and torque. Wondering if the race kit's replacement muffler has/does the same, or if it's even necessary with the new muffler and ECM...

Mike, did you ride long enough to notice what kind of heat the 12 was putting off? I'm quickly falling in love with the promise of the power from the new 12s, but I'm in Texas and if there's considerable more heat, I'll stick with my black XB9S-L and be happy.

I'm wondering if a poorman's race muffler would be to chop open the stock exhaust and remove the valve and close the muffler back up again. Or is it removable without cutting and welding?

(I probably wouldn't get away with posting this anonymously, would I. Consider it one of my nine stupid questions a day allowance.)

Anyone seen a dyno chart on the new bikes yet? I was hoping for a HUGE difference between the new bikes and the old tubers, but from the above descriptions, I am now not so sure. Less weight + more power should = wheelie machine. It is comforting to know that a hard wheelie will not rip out the case though.

Why would you want to disable the valve?
Seems to me like a good thing to keep a high, flat torque curve.

I've seen power and torque curves for the XB12's with and without the valve open; with the valve locked in either the closed or open position, you end up with some dips in the power curve. With it closed, you lose power at 2000-2500 and on the top end; with it open, you have the classic big dip in the midrange. That's why they went to all the expense of having a control system and stepper motor to open and close it at the right time.

The new bikes are definitely the quickest Buells ever made, but is the difference "HUGE"? Ride one and see. They both make significantly more power and weigh less than an X1, so if that's your standard of comparison, you may be in for a pleasant surprise.

Seems to me that the if they wanted to maintain the profile of the torque curve, they'd us a valve in the race muffler, too. When I bought my XB9S-L, I immediately put the race kit on. Love the power and hearing the exhaust "in stereo." From all I've read so far, I'd stick with the stock exhaust if I went with an XB12...

How does the engine feel? Is she smooth like the 9 or does being stroked make her more comparable to the tubers?

I didn't notice any more heat compared to the XB9S while I was riding. I normally ride an M2, so I did notice the heat from the fan when stopped. However, I didn't think it was any worse than the XB9S.

My thinking was simply cost savings:
Stock muffler = flapper valve;
Race muffler = no flapper valve;
Budget race muffler = disable flapper valve;
Buy other race kit components piecemeal.

It's not even 8am here yet, I think I'll go get a cup of coffee, then go take a nap in the restroom while the coffee cools on my desk. ;)

That's cool. I just remembered RPMs are lower on a 12 at any given speed also because of higher-geared primary. I'm sure that it's fine. I promise not to whine about my 9's hot seat anymore, even if it is 100 degrees here in Austin, Texas today!

Just went into my nearest HD shop on Friday and they had a black 12S sitting there. I talked with the guys for quite a while. I must say, I rode away on my 9-S trying to think of what it would be like to have a much beefier mid-range. I'd gladly give away the revs for that!
