You know, I totally understood that RSS stuff, but today, I got my copy of Fuell, and I just have to ask, What is the problem with axle sliders, and bar ends?"

I mean, I don't know about anyone else, but I have replaced my little plastic bar ends with something a little more substantial, and have noticed nothing. Same thing goes for the axle sliders. They don't seem to affect the fan at all.

Could this just be them "towing the company line yet again?"

A secret conspiracy, perhaps?

Frame pucks, I have, and like. I just feel that little added protection could be a good thing. Is it bad to replace those plastic bar sliders with metal ones? Have I ruined my motorcycle? I hardly ever go low speed....

And those axle sliders. Are they ok too?

I dont have the copy of my Fuell where I can get to it, but I believe the person asking the question wasnt talking about axle and bar end sliders. I think he wanted to know about frame/motor mount type sliders.

He was asking about the frame mounted sliders -- which are not recommended by Buell.

Anyone that was at the Mid-Ohio Inside Pass and saw the XBRR that hit the grass(hard) will attest to how well conventional frame sliders work on an XB - it did a tremendous job of protecting the rest of the bike, but ripped a hole in the frame where it was attached big enough to poke your finger through!! The plastic stick-on frame pucks are the best idea since knee sliders!!

The lsl system always appeared iffy to me. Looks like a good way to break a motor mount.

but these look stout.

Which is PRECISELY what Henry Duga will tell you. They do more damage than they prevent.

Surely, no one would be tasteless enough to go take a good close look at the XBRR in the garage, or take a picture.

Or two. : )

In all fairness, the bike went down HARD from what I hear.

This one had me thinking too Stretchman.
Of course Abe recommends the pucks, but not just because it's a company product but because Buell designed it and has some control on how it's used.
Recommending another company's bar ends or axle sliders could lead to problems for them. Recommending bar ends or sliders in general can too. Too many products and too little control over use, quality and the like.

We live in the land of the law suit.

But he could, and did warn against any slider that attached to the frame or engine. That was the main point that they wanted to make.
Note that there were no negative comments actually aimed at bar ends or axle sliders. I think that Buell just can't recommend them. IMHO using those can only help.

Somebody used to make CF covers for the frame and I remember seeing those with the frame pucks mounted on those for a greater amount of protection.

Just my .02, but I would never add a rigid mounting between the frame and the engine. You'd lose the benefits of the uniplanar isolation system.

I was riding in really cold weather on the highway recently and I was dropping my left hand to the cylinder head occasionally to get some warmth to my fingers. With my palm touching the frame and my fingers on the cooling fins, I could really feel the engine moving independently of the frame. I can't imaging what would happen to your isolators and motor mounts (moreso the mounts) if all of those cycles were absorbed by the aluminum in your cylinder head.

Most of you by now have seen how well the DarkHorseMoto axle sliders work, not from us but by members of BadWeB.

Skully, I finally got around to doing what I promised: To order some axle sliders from DarkHorseMoto when my XB9S was rebuilt after the 6/30 crash. Thanks and ride safe!

all this controversy.... all the times of being told not to do something... reminds me of my teen years... I have the RSS and that cage in my garage. It would be a shame NOT to mount them on the bike. Bike is insured for replacement value, policy doesnt preclude me from riding her offroad... my dollar, my bike, my call, pics up when she is done.
