'03 XB9S

1200 miles

I just changed the oil to mobil 15w50 at 1k and it did this a couple times before and now after the change.

It's leaving a small pool of clearish green sludge under the left peg in the garage ... it seems to be dripping from the drain line behind the peg. I thought this was the fuel vent?

Little bigger than a quarter in size ...thoughts?

That is the fuel drain. Weird. I'd remove the line and see if you can blow it out with some compressed air, see what you get out of it.

Take off your airbox cover, and unplug the line from the fitting. See if there is any of that gunk in the tip of the fitting.

Make sure the leak is not coming from the fuel pump.Three possible sources:
1. Fuel pump gasket
2. O-ring on fuel line
3. Seal on wire assembly

Well I pulled the air box cover and blew the line out with air ... not much came out.

When the bike is hot some times it will have a drip hanging from the end of the line and it is about the consistency of oil. Once it has accumulated on the garage floor and cooled it becomes more of a sludge. It doesn't always do this, I have probably went to leave for the morning and discovered a spot maybe 3-4 times.

It doesn't smell like anything to me. I don't have much of a sense of smell but there is no obvious odor such as gasoline. My girl said she thought it smelled like paint.

Its fairly clear with a yellow or greenish tint. Seems to clear/clean to be motor oil, not to mention IDK how oil could get into the fuel breather.

I am planning to fab a catch can anyway, guess I'll route it there as well.

Thoughts? Should I be more worried about this?

Jfoster, I have had the same thing happen to me. I never have looked into it too deep. I haven't noticed any oil loss or problems with the way the bike runs. I'm going to check out my hose and air filter tonight or tomorrow.
It has only happened twice, and both times it was really hot outside and I was riding the bike for long distances.
Hopefully it's nothing to worry about.
Mine is an 03 XB9S also.

LMK if you find anything out. I am trying not to stress about it.

Did you over fill the tank with fuel. That sounds like the vent line from the tank. I did that at a track day and had the same results.

I see you have a 2003 with 1200 miles? Very low for that year. How often do you ride. Or actually, how long does the bike sit?

Sounds like fuel varnish to me. Sludge caused by letting the fuel sit in the tank for months at a time. The fuel will break down and separate resulting in a gooey green, sometimes amber sludge. Sta-Bil fuel stabilizer can be purchased at any parts house and will save you alot of headaches.

Anyway, it doesn't sound like anything serious at all, just normal stuff.

Yes I just bought it about a month ago with 660 miles on it. It was a womens bike and she said she started a new job right after she bought it new and rarely had time to ride it. But that she took it around the block every week or two ... other than that it sat in the garage with a cover on it.

I have rode it regularly since I got it and ran several tanks of fuel through it. Hopefully this will clear up.

Thanks

I just took the airbox cover off and blew out the line. Nothing came out. The air filter looked clean and there was no sludge in the airbox area. I didn't notice any oil loss and the bike has always run fine. I don't think it's anything to worry about, but I'm not a certified Buell technician.
Personally, I think it's normal. If you have ever talked to someone who has a catch can, the same looking sludge comes out of the petcock when you drain one of those. I think investing in a Drummer catch can, or similar brand, would be a good investment for everyone who owns a Buell. I think it will be my next one.
