Hi, I just installed some Oberon bar ends & whilst taking off the hand guards XB9SX - I can't figure how to get those round cylinder bolts off ( that hold the clutch / brake leaver in place ) without replacing the the bolt ? Anyone who has done this already - please chime in - would love some ideas Also, since taking out the mickey mouse ears - those empty screw holes look untidy - I've noticed those filled on some of your custom bikes ? where do i get something to fill em ? what size bolts are they ? Cheers for any help (Message edited by moondust on February 12, 2007) |

You have to replace the bolts. I guess you could cut them but it probably wouldn't look as nice as getting the stock bolts that are used on the 12S/12Ss. You can order the plugs that are used on the Firebolts for the mirror mount holes. I had gone the other way. I bought handguards and the posts & ends for my 12Scg. Changing the posts out for the regular screws is very easy. The levers don't have to come off. Its just unscrew the posts and insert the screws & tighten it up. Im thinking of getting some CRG levers - hoping they come with a replacement bolt to replace those posts but I really haven't thought thru " discarding my handguards yet " I kinda wanna hold on to em for cold situations & the fact they save me a bruised knuckle when going thru traffic jams. The thing is I have destroyed the screw that holds one of the handguards in place - it was a bugger to unscrew & after destroying the head - I finally had to use the pliers to unscrew it so for now - I guess Im dropping the handguards until I get hold of the screw from somewhere ? which neatly leads me on to those CRG brake /clutch levers - will they eliminate those posts ?

Al at American Sportbike sells an adapter kit that lets use the handguards with the CRG mirrors. It's basically a couple longer bolts & some spacers. I don't know how to post a link but the item # is 9252 - Adapter Hardware kit, L+R, for using CRG Bar End mirrors with Ulysses and CityX handguard |

A couple clever BadWebers simply drilled a hole through the sides of the handguards and bolted the CRGs directly to the handguard |

If You get new levers You will still need the stock 12S/12Ss screws if you want to lose the posts. They can be ordered from any of our sponsors or at your nearest dealer. Who knows, maybe they might have them in stock. You can always order new posts from them as well if you should decide to go back to using the guards. |

It might be a good idea to go to the sponsor section to the Appleton link to the "Andy I don't need it now but.." thread & ask him what the screws & posts cost. I doubt that it would be a whole lot. I mean it's Buell, not HD (hundred dollar) |

Moondust, I did the same thing as you and took of my hand gaurds about a year ago. For the remaining posts I went to my dealer and bought two extra posts and took them to the band saw and cut them down, sanded and put a little black spray paint on the ends and then replaced the originals with them. They look like they were ment to be. Oh and by the way the bolts for the xb12 levers are not the same. I went through this exact same thing as you when I took my hand guards off. If you want pictures of the finished product let me know and Ill take some. |

Oh and by the way the bolts for the xb12 levers are not the same. That's why you need one or the other. When I decided to get handguards for my 12S I had to buy the guards, the bar ends and the posts. The posts come with the screws & nuts included. If you buy the screws for a 12S they come with the nuts as well. Whether it be posts or 12S stock screws, there is one for the clutch side and one for the brake side. They (12S hardware & cityX/Uly hardware) are indeed different because they need to be for the two different applications. BRAKE SIDE: pivot bolt kit with nut part # N0203.3 XB12S-Scg CLUTCH SIDE: bolt part # CA0002.T XB12S-Scg nut part # CD0001.T XB12S-Scg I guess it's two different parts for the clutch side. Though you can probably reuse the nut from the CityX since it's the same nut (same part#) The brake side comes with the nut. I keep the normal replacement pivot bolts and nuts in stock for those that want to remove the handguards ( I did on my Uly). I don't have the part number here at home, but it's just a few bucks and includes both pivot bolts and nuts. We put the mirror plugs in with the bar end mirrors when we sell them. Al |

Naesnobig - damn - I just ordered the 12s screw bolt kit for brake & clutch - this really is a can of worms - if i saw it off - thats fine but if i ever want to put this hand guards back on later - how would I get the rest of the screw body out in order to put in the posts on again ? Im guess you just wrench it out. Are the 12s brake lever setup really different to the 9sx ? the dealer said he checked & it was the same ... ?? |

Moondust read Al's post. You don't have to cut the posts. Stash your posts away incase you want to you use them again. The brake & clutch lever setup on the 12S & CityX cross are identical. How do I explain this. The stock 12S pivot bolts will work on a 12S or a CityX. there's one that goes on the brake side and one for the clutch side. The handguard pivotbolts/posts will work on a 12S and a CityX. There is one for the brake side and one for the clutch side. The levers on the CityX and the 12S are the same. Only difference is the CityX levers are black and the 12S levers are not. There is no can of worms. All is well |

Oh, yes the posts wrench off. You'll notice the top half has a section that is shaped to accept a wrench. The whole bottom half is shaped to accept a wrench. |
