Yikes!

This is revenue generation, not law enforcement. I understand your place in this,
I wouldn't say no thank you to $50 an hour either, but the politicians and beuracrats behind
this are the same kind of weenies that brought us "55 saves lives" (ignore the statistics)
And those ugly guns need to be banned because they scare me( never mind the fact criminals
don't buy their guns at a gun shop).

This is about $$$$ not just in fines, but in the bigger picture it's about MILLIONS or even
BILLIONS in federal highway dollars. They aren't trying to save you, they want to save the
(ever increasing) budget.

I know, don't kill the messenger, but I'm on a bit of a tear today.

Thanks for the "heads up"

I do what i can Just know that its not about revenue, its about educating the population. fact is seat belts save lives. We the local municaplities dont get a dime for writing any kind of ticket. (at least in NJ) the state gets all the money. The local towns get money from writing town ordinances. And in my town we hardly write those. So if its a revenue generating thing I wouldn't know. I just know I have seen what happends when you dont wear a seat belt.

I agree that seatbelts work. I've been there.

Like I said. The revenue generation is WAY above the local level. And involves vast sums of money.
They just make you guys do the dirty work while they smile and kiss babies and make promises
about where they'll spend all that money. (more, larger speed bumps! Oh boy!)

Besides it's nothing new for me, I lived in CA for 15 of the last 17 years, so the
mandatory seat belt law is not new to me. I got weird looks when I moved back because
I always buckle up. It's an OLD habit now. Not a new thing.

i can't attest to how it works in NJ. but here in michigan when you go and pay that ticket about 20% of it stays at the county level. the state also pays the local police departments grant money so that they don't have to pay the officers out of the regular budget. if each of the departments don't issue enough tickets then they don't get the grant money the next year. this is just how it works in michigan. other states may differ.

i am not stating this to make any police officers look bad. this all happens at the municipal level and up.

Are there really that many people that don't wear seat belts?

I guess I just don't get it. With no helmet you at least get breeze in your hair, with no seat belt you get what, breeze on your nipple?

Not meaning to seem snippy.. But I don't have seat belts on my Buell..

As for in the truck. Always.

Think about it. Do you wear gear when you ride? Or do you wear shorts/tee and flip flops? A seatbelt is BASIC safety gear. I've seen too many people that just couldn't be bothered to wear one. You don't want to hear some of those stories, they get kind of graphic (think Planet Burn from a high side at 100+ with no leathers, pads or armor on)

Ok, I'm out on this topic.

Buckle Up BadWeb.

Click-it, Shmick-it... Tickets I'd like to see actually given:

Rolling stops / Failures to stop.

Illegal lane changes on turns. (yes, this varies from state to state, I know)

Failure to yield to pedestrians.

Yeah, and how about the ability to ticket the cops that don't know how to abide by the same rules they're enforcing? I see more cops speeding (especially motorcycle cops on their way to start their shift who take their bike home with them at night), rolling stops, failure to signal turns and lane changes, failure to use headlights when raining (new Cali law as of Jan 1, although rarely enforced yet), etc...

I'll be installing the seat belts on my XB12 next week. Where do you guys attach yours, onto the inside of the frame? I got some belts from a saab in the junk yard for $5 - perfect working order.
Is there a problem with heat on the belt?

It will look a bit goofy, but I can't afford to get those tickets!

I was on my way to Barber for the AMA races last weekend, and an Alabama State Trooper in an unmarked SUV sitting on the side of the road pulled out in front of me to chase a speeding Hayabusa. He never looked for me, just pulled out. No lights or sirens until he got into the road.

Because he was chasing dollars in the name of "safety" he nearly caused a crash that could have hurt or killed me.

Traffic citations are complete crap most of the time. If someone is driving/riding erratically, then I'm all for it. But if someone is driving in a safe manner at a speed appropriate for the conditions, leave 'em alone. It's one thing to do 90mph on a deserted highway and quite another story to do it in heavy traffic cutting in and out of cars.

It's not about safety, it's about money. Period.

I don't blame the officers. They are out there doing their jobs. I blame the idiots that make them chase down people who aren't doing any harm instead of allocating our law enforcement resources where they would be more effective in actually fighting crime.

Heck yeah, ticket those clowns who drive around with their kids climbing all over the car. They're the kind of drivers that scare me, not even looking at the road, just yelling and swatting at their kids.

My response was an honest request though for ticketing that would benefit me/us as a biker...

"I don't blame the officers. They are out there doing their jobs."

How is my statement saying anything against law enforcement officers? I didn't "mother f..." anyone except the politicians who want to fill the coffers by having guys like yourself waste your time harrassing decent folks instead busting real criminals (which is I assume is the reason you got into law enforcement in the first place).

Failure to yield to pedestrians.

Yes, and on the same note, I would like ot see pedestrians cited for putting themselves in danger and obstructing traffic in the city too. In our little densly populated city of York, and probably others as well, pedestrians walk as slowly as they possibly can to show you that they have some kind of magical car stopping power. }}

Got1,
It looks more like people are raging against the system than the officers.

In fact most people state, like I did, that it is not the officers fault.

Seriously, thanks for the heads-up!

I object to seatbelt laws and helmet laws. They screw up Darwin's theory. Thanks for the warning Got1...But I'd just as soon drive without my seatbelt as I would show up at work in my underwear.

The office warned me that if I did that again, they would put it on my permanent record.

Oh, and for the record...Anything the police can do to increase city/County/State revenue, hopefully maintaining my property taxes at their current level, I'm all for it. Especially if they start giving really stiff fines to cyclists exceeding the speed limit. If people are breaking the law, hell, let 'em chip in.

It's the Law, seatbelts save lives. Officers let a lot of people get away with a lot of violations. I know because they have let me go numerous times, and I have been thankful. Got1, thanks for the headsup. I had forgot all about it.
